Talking to Meta AI out loud on WhatsApp: voice chats in Arabic, keeping it running while you work, home-screen widgets and Live AI through your camera
Your hands are full of stock, or you would simply rather say it in Arabic than type it. WhatsApp's Help Center describes four ways to talk to Meta AI out loud: a voice chat, a voice chat that keeps going while you use other apps, home-screen widgets, and Live AI, where Meta AI sees what your camera sees. This guide puts those articles in order and says what Meta receives. They describe WhatsApp in general, and not every feature reaches every country or phone.

A voice conversation with Meta AI
WhatsApp's article How to talk to Meta AI with voice (read in its Android and iPhone versions) says:
- Two-way
- You speak and Meta AI answers in voice and text. A transcript of what you said appears in the chat.
- Languages
- At this time only English, Arabic, Bengali, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese are supported. The voice articles do not list Portuguese.
- Not everywhere
- Meta AI and some experiences are only available in limited countries and might not be available to you yet, even if others in your country have access.
- What it is for
- WhatsApp lists brainstorming, asking questions without typing, getting recommendations, talking about interests and creating AI-generated images.
- Optional
- Talking to Meta AI is optional, and it is up to you whether you use text or voice.
This is older than it looks. In a Newsroom post on 25 September 2024, Meta said people could now use their voice to talk to Meta AI on Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram DM, that it would respond out loud, and that there was a choice of voices.

Four places to start a voice chat
WhatsApp says it is still testing, so some people see some of these routes and not others. In each one you start speaking, then stop speaking to send what you said.
- The Chats tab
- Tap the Meta AI button on the Chats tab, then the voice button.
- The Calls tab
- Some people need to go to the Calls tab and start voice from there.
- Meta AI settings
- Some people need to open the chat with Meta AI, tap Meta AI, then tap Audio.
- Inside the Meta AI chat
- Open the chat with Meta AI and tap the voice button.
- First time
- You may be asked to accept Meta's AI Terms of Service and to let WhatsApp use the microphone. How to continue a voice conversation outside of the chat with Meta AI adds that you pick a voice, or tap Skip for the default.
- Changing the voice
- Open the chat with Meta AI, tap Meta AI at the top, then Voice. You can also choose a voice during a conversation.
- Pictures by voice
- Describe the image you want out loud. When it is made, you can share it to a chat, edit it, or ask Meta AI to try again.
- Rating an answer
- Tap and hold an AI message, then Good response or Bad response. Add a reason if asked, then Submit.
- Leaving
- The end voice button closes voice at any time.
Keeping it running while you use other apps
WhatsApp's article How to continue a voice conversation outside of the chat with Meta AI says the conversation carries on whether you are browsing WhatsApp or doing something else on your phone:
- How
- Start voice from the Calls tab, then tap the multitask button (two arrows) or leave the screen. Meta AI keeps answering in voice, and the transcript of what you said stays in the chat.
- How you know it is on
- A notification with a timer appears on your notifications screen, and a timer shows at the top of your home screen.
- Mute
- Muting pauses the conversation for a while. Outside WhatsApp on Android, open your notifications, tap the Meta AI notification, then Mute or Unmute. On iPhone, tap the indicator at the top of your home screen, then the mute button.
- Hang up
- Outside WhatsApp on Android, open your notifications, tap the Meta AI notification, then Hang up. On iPhone, tap the indicator at the top of your home screen, then the end button. You can end it at any time.

Shortcuts on your home screen
WhatsApp's article How to add shortcuts to AI experiences to your phone's home screen lists three widgets you might have:
- Ask Meta AI
- Chat with Meta AI by typing.
- Meta AI voice
- Chat with Meta AI by voice.
- Meta AI camera
- Prompt Meta AI with a new or existing image.
- Android
- Tap and hold the home screen > Widgets > type WhatsApp in the search bar > WhatsApp > choose a widget > Add. Repeat for each widget. To remove one, tap and hold it > Remove (on a Pixel, drag it to the top of the screen). WhatsApp says the steps vary by phone and Android version.
- iPhone
- Tap and hold the home screen until the apps move > Edit > Add Widget > type WhatsApp in the search bar > WhatsApp, swipe to the widget you want, then Add Widget. To remove one, tap and hold it > Remove Widget > Remove.
- Phone language
- You can chat with Meta AI in any language, but WhatsApp says that in some markets Meta AI is only available on phones set to certain languages.
Live AI: Meta AI sees what your camera sees
WhatsApp's article How to use Live AI through WhatsApp says that during a Live AI session Meta AI can see what your camera sees in real time, so you can ask about what is in front of you. The phone versions of the article say Meta AI and some experiences are only in limited countries and might not be available to you yet. The Web, Windows and Mac versions of the article only say the feature is available on certain devices.
- WhatsApp's examples
- Identifying a plant or insect, step-by-step cooking help, translating a sign or menu in real time, and troubleshooting a home repair while you show the problem.
- Languages
- The same list as voice, with Portuguese added.
- Starting
- Open the chat with Meta AI, tap the voice button, then the Live AI camera button, then tap Next to share your screen. Point your camera at what you need help with, start speaking, and stop speaking when you are done.
- During the session
- Pinch or double tap to zoom in on details, and ask follow-up questions. Expanding the text response shows Meta AI's full written answer and turns the video off.
- Typing instead
- When the video is off, tap Type your question and type it.
- Ending
- You can end a Live AI session at any time.
In a Newsroom post on 8 April 2026, updated 12 May 2026, Meta said it was bringing live AI to the Meta AI app, a feature already on its AI glasses. It said the new Meta AI features were starting to roll out in the US in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, and that in the following weeks it would bring 'these new modes and capabilities' to more countries and to places including WhatsApp. The post does not say when Live AI itself would reach WhatsApp, and it does not mention the UAE.
