Making pictures for your WhatsApp business with Meta AI: status images, photo edits, a profile picture, stickers, and the AI label on channels
Meta's AI tools inside WhatsApp can now make pictures: an image from a sentence, a restyled version of your own photo, a status image, a new profile photo, stickers and video call backgrounds. For a small business that posts status updates, runs a channel or sends product photos, that is a quick way to make something to share. Here is what WhatsApp's Help Center says each tool does, what Meta receives when you use it, and what Meta's AI Terms make you responsible for.

Making an image in a chat with Meta AI
WhatsApp's Help Center says you open your chat with Meta AI, describe the image you want, and the generated image appears in the chat. On a computer, the Help Center says you hover over the image and click Download to save it. To change it, reply to the image and describe what you want updated. To animate it, type Animate it in the message field after the image has been made.
- Languages
- Making an image in the chat with Meta AI, a status image or a profile photo currently supports English, Arabic, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese.
- Where it works
- Only in limited countries. WhatsApp says you may not have it yet even if others in your country do.
- Accuracy
- Meta warns that some images it generates might not be accurate or appropriate. Using the feature means agreeing to Meta's AI Terms of Service.
Restyle with AI: editing your own photo
You can also give Meta AI a photo of your own. In the chat with Meta AI, attach the photo and type what you want changed. In an ordinary one-to-one or group chat, attach the photo and tap Restyle with AI, then choose Filters, Styles or Edit.
- Describe
- Type what you want added to the image or changed in it.
- Background
- Type what you want removed from the image.
- Animate
- Turns the image into an animated one.
- Expand
- Changes a landscape image to portrait, with Meta AI filling in the background to make a full-screen image.
The Help Center says uploading a photo is optional and that Meta AI does not access your photos unless you choose to upload them. You can delete your AI chats and the photos you sent to Meta AI at any time. When you do use these tools, Meta receives your prompts, the messages you share and your feedback, both to answer you and to improve its AI quality.

An AI image for your status
On your phone, go to Updates, tap Add status, then AI images. Pick one of the suggested images or describe the one you want. You can then add a caption, text, stickers, a drawing or music before you post it.
- Who sees it
- Tap Status (Contacts) to choose your audience. Tapping @ adds up to 5 private mentions, which notify those people or groups, and they can reshare your status to their own audience.
- The Add yours sticker
- It lets others see the prompt you used and try it themselves. If you picked a suggested prompt, that prompt becomes the description. You can move, resize or remove the sticker before posting.
- Privacy
- WhatsApp says your status stays end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp and Meta cannot see what you post.

An AI profile photo
The Help Center describes making a profile photo with Meta AI: go to WhatsApp Settings, tap your profile photo, tap Edit, then Create an AI image. From there you can tap Create image and describe one, tap Edit photo to start from a photo you upload, or pick a suggested image. Edit then lets you add, remove or change parts of the image, and Restyle applies a suggested style or one you describe. A group icon works the same way: open the group chat, tap the group name, then Edit and Create an AI image.

AI stickers and call backgrounds
To make an AI sticker, open a chat, tap Create sticker, then Use AI, and describe the sticker. WhatsApp generates up to four. Sticker descriptions work only in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish for now. WhatsApp says Meta processes the prompt without seeing your account information. Stickers can be reported, and WhatsApp says it may ban a user it believes is breaking its terms, including by sharing inappropriate AI-generated content.
For a video call, tap Backgrounds, swipe through them and tap Create with AI, then describe the background you want or pick a suggestion. WhatsApp says calls stay end-to-end encrypted. The background tool supports a slightly shorter list of languages than making an image in the chat with Meta AI: German and Italian are not on it.
Posting AI pictures to a channel: the label
WhatsApp's Help Center says channel admins in some countries are required by local law to label channel updates that share AI content, meaning an image, video or other media made or edited with AI tools. Where local law requires it, WhatsApp may also detect and label AI content on its own. The feature is rolling out gradually.
- How to add it
- After sharing the update, tap and hold it (or open its menu on a computer), then Add AI content label, then Add label. The same works for a channel status.
- Once added
- The label cannot be removed.
- Where it is required
- The Help Center does not list the countries. The status, sticker and photo-editing pages repeat the same note.

What Meta's AI Terms make you responsible for
WhatsApp's pages on images in a chat, photo edits, status images, profile photos and call backgrounds each say that using the feature means agreeing to Meta's AI Terms of Service. The general version we read took effect on 13 May 2026. Meta has separate AI Terms for people in the United Kingdom, Brazil and the European Region. The points a business should know:
- Your prompts
- You keep the rights you have in what you type or upload. Your prompts must not infringe other people's rights, including their intellectual property and privacy.
- People in your photos
- By giving Meta AI a photo, you confirm you have permission from the people shown in it.
- Checking the result
- Meta says that, as far as the law allows, it is not responsible for what its AI produces, and you are responsible for checking it for accuracy and suitability. The Terms also say you should not rely on what it produces for any purpose, or use it to inform decisions about medicine, finance, law or pharmaceuticals, and that checking it is your sole responsibility.
- Misleading use
- The acceptable uses forbid using the AI to deceive or mislead others.
What the Terms do not say
Questions
Why can't I see these AI tools in my WhatsApp?
WhatsApp says Meta AI and some of its experiences are only in limited countries and limited languages, and are rolling out gradually, so you may not have them even if others in your country do. Its advice is to keep WhatsApp updated to the latest version.
Can Meta see the AI image I post to status?
WhatsApp's Help Center says your status stays end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp and Meta cannot see what you post. Making the image is a different step: the prompt you type goes to a service from Meta to create it.
Does Meta keep the photos I restyle?
The Help Center says Meta AI only sees photos you choose to upload, and that you can delete your AI chats and the photos you sent to Meta AI. It also says Meta receives your prompts, the messages you share and your feedback, and uses them to improve its AI quality. The page does not say how long Meta keeps them. Meta's AI Terms say Meta uses what you send and what the AI makes to provide and improve its services, including through automated or human review. The Terms add that the AI sometimes keeps and uses what you share, and that deleting messages, chats or even your account may not delete Meta's copy; they point to Meta's Privacy Center for the right way to delete it.
Do I have to label AI pictures on my channel?
Only where local law requires it, according to WhatsApp. The Help Center does not list the countries, and WhatsApp may also add the label itself where the law requires it. A label you add cannot be removed.
Who owns an image Meta AI makes for me?
Meta's AI Terms say you keep the rights you have in your prompts. They do not say who owns the images the AI produces, and this guide does not answer that question.
