Can Meta AI read your WhatsApp chats with customers? What WhatsApp's Help Center says about mentions, summaries and restricted chat
Meta AI now sits inside WhatsApp, in the Chats tab, the search bar and group chats. Owners ask a fair question: can it read what customers send us? WhatsApp's Help Center gives a clear rule for what Meta can read, explains how a person in a chat brings Meta AI in, and describes a setting that keeps some AI features out of a chat. Here is what those pages say.

What Meta can read, and what it cannot
WhatsApp's Help Center describes Meta AI as an optional service from Meta, only in some countries so far. Its rule for reading is short: only messages that mention Meta AI, or that people choose to share with it, can be read by Meta. Meta cannot read the other messages in personal chats, which stay end-to-end encrypted, so only the people in the chat can read them.
The Help Center also says a chat with the AI only starts when a person opens one or sends it a message. Meta and WhatsApp cannot start one. What is sent to Meta AI, along with feedback, is received by Meta and may be used to improve its AI, and the Help Center's advice is not to send it anything you do not want Meta to know. Chats with it can be deleted, and its answers may not always be accurate.
How Meta AI comes into a chat
- Mentioning it
- Someone in a chat, including a group chat, mentions Meta AI and asks a question. Meta can read that message, not the rest of the chat.
- Forwarding a message to it
- A person can forward a message to Meta AI to ask about it. That message is then shared with Meta.
- Summaries and writing help
- Some features, such as summarising unread messages and help with writing, run on what Meta calls Private Processing. The Help Center says neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read those messages and they are not kept afterwards. These features only work in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish for now, and each can be switched off in Settings. The Help Center adds that a summary of unread messages is offered once enough have piled up, is seen only by the person who asked for it, and disappears when they scroll away or leave the chat.
- Restricted chat
- A setting that stops others using those Private Processing features in a chat. In a group, an admin switches it on; in a one-to-one chat, either person can.
AI agents from other companies
The Help Center also covers AI agents built by other developers that a person connects to WhatsApp. Those agents can only see what is shared with them. Because a Meta service manages those conversations on the agent's behalf, WhatsApp says chats with them are not counted as end-to-end encrypted.
This is separate from Meta Business Agent, the AI a business can switch on to answer its own customers, and from Meta AI business assistant, which helps the owner. The business assistant guide covers what Meta receives from that one, and the guide on who can read your messages when a system is connected covers business messaging software.

Questions
If a customer asks Meta AI to summarise our WhatsApp messages, can we see the summary?
No. WhatsApp's Help Center says only the person who asks sees a message summary, and it disappears when they scroll away or leave the chat. It is offered once there are enough unread messages, and only in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish for now.
Can Meta AI read our WhatsApp chats with customers?
WhatsApp's Help Center says Meta can only read messages that mention Meta AI or that people choose to share with it. Other messages in personal chats stay end-to-end encrypted. It does not describe chats with a business separately.
Can a customer ask Meta AI about a message our business sent?
The Help Center says a person can forward a message to Meta AI to ask about it, and that message is then shared with Meta.
Does summarising WhatsApp messages with Meta AI let Meta read them?
The Help Center says summaries and writing help use Private Processing, where neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the messages, and nothing is kept afterwards.
What is restricted chat on WhatsApp?
A setting that stops others in a chat using Meta AI features that run on Private Processing. A group admin can switch it on in a group, and either person can in a one-to-one chat.
Are chats with AI agents from other companies end-to-end encrypted on WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp's Help Center says a Meta service manages those chats on the agent's behalf, so they are not considered end-to-end encrypted, and the agent only sees what is shared with it.
