Meta AI business assistant in the WhatsApp Business app: what it helps the owner with, and what Meta receives

Some WhatsApp Business apps now show a chat called Business assistant. It is Meta AI business assistant, a helper that talks to the owner, not to customers. Here is what WhatsApp's own Help Center says it can do, the three ways to ask it, what Meta receives when you use it, and how to delete what you shared.

A helper for the owner, not the customers

WhatsApp's Help Center describes Meta AI business assistant as an optional service for businesses on the WhatsApp Business app. It is not the AI agent that answers customers; it answers the owner. Meta lists five jobs for it: writing better product descriptions, learning new skills to grow the business, making images and content for the catalog, explaining how to set up a marketing campaign, and suggesting improvements to the business profile.

It is only in some countries and languages, and the Help Center says it can be missing even when others in the same country have it. English and Arabic are among the languages its articles list.

Meta also uses the same name for a different chat on its ads side. Meta for Business describes Meta AI business assistant as a helper inside the Meta ad account, in Ads Manager and Business Support Home, that charts campaign results, suggests changes, and helps with problems such as a disabled ad account or a daily spending limit. Meta says it is in beta, started in English with selected businesses, and that an advertiser who has it is told by a pop-up in the ad account. Meta's own questions page separates it from Meta Business Agent, the AI that replies to customers on WhatsApp or Messenger.

Our reading: one name, two places

The helper in the WhatsApp Business app and the one in the ad account carry the same name but sit in different places and do different jobs. Neither one answers customers. When a staff member says they asked the business assistant, it is worth asking which screen they were on.

Three ways to ask it

From the Chats tab
Open it from the Chats tab and tap a suggested prompt or type your own. The conversation then stays in the Chats list under the name Business assistant, with past messages kept there.
From the search bar
Type in the search field above the chats. Results from your chats appear alongside questions you can ask it; tapping Ask opens the assistant. The first time, Meta shows its terms to accept.
By voice or with a photo
Hold the microphone and speak, or attach or take a photo and ask about it. It replies with text, an image or search results. Describing a picture by voice can make an AI image, which can then be shared to a chat.

What Meta receives

The Help Center is direct about it. When the owner uses the assistant, Meta receives the prompts, the AI messages, any feedback and information about the business such as its profile, to answer and to improve AI at Meta. It does not see photos unless they are sent to it.

Searching the app without asking the assistant is different: results from chats stay on the phone, and Meta says it does not connect what is typed to the person unless a prompt is sent. Personal messages and calls stay end-to-end encrypted. Individual chats with the assistant can be deleted, and deletion of what was shared can be requested. Meta adds that some of its answers may not be accurate or appropriate.

Our reading for the owner

Use it for drafts, keep customers out of the prompts

Our reading: it is useful for first drafts of product descriptions, catalog pictures and profile wording, which the owner then checks before publishing. Because prompts go to Meta and help improve its AI, leave customers' names, numbers and order details out of what you ask it.

The agent that answers customers is a separate thing, covered in the app AI agent setup guide, and how Meta's other AI agents compare is in the Muse or Business Agent guide.
