Turning on Meta's AI agent in the WhatsApp Business app: which chats it answers, how to teach it, and what the waitlist means

Meta's AI agent can answer customers inside the WhatsApp Business app itself, without any connected system. WhatsApp's own Help Center explains how to tell whether you have it yet, how to switch it on, the four choices of which chats it answers, and how to teach it about your business. Here is what those pages say, in order.

Published 7 October 2026 · Updated 8 October 2026

Do you have it yet?

WhatsApp's Help Center says Meta Business Agent is only available in some countries, to selected businesses. The quick check is the Tools tab of the WhatsApp Business app: if there is no AI agent option there, it is not available to the business yet. Not every language is supported either, and the language it uses is set by the business's phone number, so it can be missing even in a country where it runs.

Meta offers a waitlist on its Meta Business AI website. The Help Center is plain about it: joining does not guarantee access, there is no set date, and no notice arrives in the app. If no waitlist is offered at all, the agent is not offered in that country yet, which is not a problem with the account. Nothing else in the app changes while a business waits.

Why Meta's pages also say Business AI

Meta's announcement of 2 October 2025 used the name Business AI for an AI agent a business could set up for its WhatsApp and Messenger chats and its Facebook and Instagram ads, and, for eligible businesses in the United States, on its own website. Meta said it learns from the business's posts, ad campaigns and website, that setup would later be brought together so one agent could represent the business across Meta's apps and its website, and that complex questions could be handed to the support software a business already uses. Our reading: Business AI is the earlier name for the line Meta now calls Meta Business Agent, which is why the waitlist still sits on a Business AI website.

Switching it on, and choosing which chats it answers

Setup starts in the Tools tab under AI agent, then Continue and Accept. On WhatsApp Web the same option shows a code to scan so setup finishes on the phone. A business that switched on AI agent replies through Ads Manager may be asked to finish setting it up in the app. Afterwards, under Your AI agent, then AI replies, the owner picks one of four settings:

All new one-to-one chats
The agent answers every new chat between the business and one other person.
One-to-one chats except with contacts
It answers new people but leaves alone anyone saved in the phone's contacts.
One-to-one chats from ads
It answers only chats that start from the business's Facebook or Instagram ads.
Paused for new chats but learning
It stops answering new chats but keeps learning from them.

It can also be switched on in a single chat. In a conversation already under way, the Help Center says it stays silent unless the chat has been quiet for seven days, or the owner chooses Restart AI replies in that chat. It does not answer a contact that is itself a business with its own agent switched on.

Teaching it about the business

Teaching happens on the main phone: WhatsApp's Help Center says the agent's knowledge cannot be managed from WhatsApp Web. Under Tools, then Your AI agent, it lists what the owner can give it:

Business information and bestsellers
A description of the business and the products that sell best.
How customers buy
How a customer orders and pays, so the agent can explain it.
Example responses
A customer question and the answer the agent should give, with details such as delivery or opening hours.
Documents and images
Files and photos about products, prices and policies, listed under Knowledge, where each one can be edited or deleted.

It also learns from the owner. When the owner replies by hand in a chat the agent is part of, it may save messages that contain new information about the business, which can be reviewed, edited or deleted under Review AI knowledge. It may message the owner too, asking for a return policy, a website or which chats to switch it on in, and it can be told to ask customers for details that help qualify them as buyers.

Meta's product page for the agent on WhatsApp adds a few controls. It says the agent learns from the business's Facebook Page posts as well as past chats; that rewriting an answer the owner does not like updates its future responses; and that the owner can flag topics it should avoid, or tell it to always hand complex or sensitive topics over. It lists what the agent can answer: opening hours and location, questions about products and services, recommendations, prices, discounts, payment and shipping. Meta adds that some features may not yet be available to every eligible business.

Two Google services can be connected from the phone app, not WhatsApp Web. Google Drive, under Your AI agent, then Connections: the owner signs in to Google, picks the files the agent may use and taps Sync files. WhatsApp's Help Center says the connection can take up to 12 hours, and that once Drive is disconnected the agent can no longer reach its data. Google Calendar, under Your AI agent, then Book appointments: after Google's 2-Step Verification and the permissions to view and edit appointments, the agent can schedule appointments between the business and its customers.

Our reading: the Drive permission is wider than the files

The Google step asks to let WhatsApp see and download all of the account's Drive files, even though only the chosen files are synced. Connect a Google account that holds only what the agent should know, not the one with the business's contracts and payroll.

Our reading for the owner

Start narrow, then widen

Our reading: start with chats from ads, where every chat is a new enquiry, and add example responses for the five questions customers ask most before widening it. Check Review AI knowledge each week, because anything typed by hand in those chats can become something the agent repeats.

What to give it to learn from is set out at more length in the AI agent knowledge guide, switching it off in the on-and-off guide, and how a subscription affects it in the Meta One guide.

Questions

Is Meta Business AI the same thing as Meta Business Agent?

Our reading is that it is the earlier name. Meta announced Business AI on 2 October 2025 for WhatsApp and Messenger chats, ads and, in the United States, websites; Meta's 2026 pages call the agent Meta Business Agent.

Why can't we find Meta's AI agent in our WhatsApp Business app?

WhatsApp's Help Center says it is only in some countries, for selected businesses, and not in every language. If the Tools tab has no AI agent option, it is not available to the business yet.

Does joining Meta's waitlist get us the AI agent?

Not for certain. The Help Center says the waitlist does not guarantee access, has no set date and sends no notice in the app.

Can the AI agent answer only people who came from our ads?

Yes. Under Your AI agent, then AI replies, choose one-to-one chats from ads, and it answers only chats started from the business's Facebook or Instagram ads.

Can we stop Meta's AI agent answering certain topics in the WhatsApp Business app?

Meta's product page for the agent says the owner can flag topics to avoid, or tell it to always hand complex or sensitive topics to the owner.

We switched the AI agent on in a chat and it says nothing. Why?

In a conversation already under way, the Help Center says it waits until the chat has been quiet for seven days. Choosing Restart AI replies in that chat overrides this.

Can Meta's AI agent book appointments into our Google Calendar?

Yes, where the agent is available. In the WhatsApp Business app, under Your AI agent, then Book appointments, connect Google Calendar and allow it to view and edit appointments. It cannot be done from WhatsApp Web.

Can the AI agent learn from files in our Google Drive?

Yes. Under Your AI agent, then Connections, connect Google Drive and choose which files it may use. WhatsApp's Help Center says it can take up to 12 hours, and disconnecting stops the agent reaching that data.

Can we teach the AI agent from WhatsApp Web?

No. WhatsApp's Help Center says its knowledge is managed in the WhatsApp Business app on the main phone.

Want every chat in one place you own?

We set up a business's WhatsApp number on a system its team runs, so every customer conversation sits in one place the business owns. A short call is the easiest way to see how that would work for you.
