Connecting your WhatsApp number through Meta's sign-up window: the screens you see, what you own afterwards, and the messages that stop it
When a business moves its WhatsApp number onto a proper system, the provider can put a link or button on its website or portal that opens this window. That window belongs to Meta, not to the provider. This guide puts Meta's own pages about that window into plain words: what it asks, what the business owns when it is done, and what each message that stops it halfway means.

First: what this window is
Meta's developer overview, updated 24 July 2026, describes the window as a sign-in and permission screen that works on a computer and on a phone. A provider puts a link or button on its website or portal, and clicking it opens Meta's window. The window does three things: it collects information about your business, it creates all the WhatsApp assets the platform needs, and it gives the provider's app access to those assets so the provider can run your messaging.
In that window, Meta's page says, you:
- With your Facebook or Meta business login.
- Accept terms
- Meta's terms of service for Cloud API, WhatsApp Business, Meta, Meta's marketing-messages product, and the Meta Business Tool Terms.
- Give access
- You let the provider's app access your WhatsApp assets.
- Pick or create
- A business portfolio, and a WhatsApp account inside it.
- Add the number
- Enter and verify your business phone number: your own, or one the provider has given you.
- Name it
- Enter a display name, which can appear in place of your number in WhatsApp.
The same page says the window comes in 30 languages, chosen automatically from the language you use Facebook in. Arabic and Hindi are on the list. Urdu is not.

The screens, in order
Meta's page on the default screens, updated 3 September 2026, lists them like this:
- 1. Authentication
- You sign in with your Facebook or Meta Business Suite login.
- 2. Authorization
- Shows the data you are letting the provider's app access.
- 3. Phone number addition
- Type a new business number, or pick one you already have from the list.
- 4. Phone number verification
- You choose to get the code by text message or by phone call, then enter it.
- 5. Business asset selection
- Pick an existing business portfolio and WhatsApp account to use with the number.
- 6. Business asset creation
- Shown when you have nothing suitable, or choose to start new: it collects what Meta needs to create a business portfolio, a WhatsApp account and a Messaging account.
- 7. Permissions review
- A summary of the permissions you are giving the provider's app.
- 8. Success
- Meta has created and linked your business portfolio, WhatsApp account, Messaging account, the number's display profile and the business number itself.
The page says Meta is moving the latest version to put the number first: you enter and verify it at the start, before picking or creating anything, so problems with the number show up earlier. It also says the rollout is in progress and some businesses still see the old order, with the portfolio and account screens before the number.
Meta's page lets a provider fill in some screens for you, or skip many of them. If the provider gave you the number, Meta says the provider must pass you the verification code, or give you a number that is already verified.

What you own when it is done
Meta's overview is direct about this. Businesses that sign up through the window own all of their WhatsApp assets, and can use them with other Meta products, such as ads that click to WhatsApp. They also have full access to WhatsApp Manager, where they can reach those assets, and Meta tells providers they cannot restrict this access in any way.

Right after the window: Cloud API only, limits, and billing
- Cloud API only
- Meta's overview says business numbers connected this way can only be registered for use with Cloud API.
- Messaging limits
- Businesses that sign up this way start with messaging limits, which can be raised through use.
- Billing before the first message
- Billing must be set up before you can send. It sits on the Messaging account, so each provider on a number bills separately.
- With a Tech Provider
- Meta says the business adds its own payment method to its Messaging account.
- With a provider that has a Meta credit line
- That provider shares its line of credit with the business during sign-up instead.
BitByteCore is a verified Meta Tech Provider (since 9 September 2026). How the two billing arrangements differ is in Who pays Meta for your WhatsApp.

Messages about your Facebook login or business portfolio
Meta's page on the window's error messages, updated 5 October 2026, lists what can stop it and what to do. The ones about your login and portfolio:
- “Your Facebook account is too new to create a business account. Try again in an hour.”
- New Facebook accounts have to wait before they can create a business account. Meta suggests using an existing active Facebook account, or waiting a few hours, and says you can keep using the new account while you wait.
- Account flagged for suspicious behaviour
- If Meta's systems flagged the Facebook account, or it can no longer advertise, Meta suggests using an existing, active Facebook account with no prior issues.
- Limit on businesses you can create
- There is a limit on how many business accounts you can create, and only one can be created at a time. Meta suggests using an existing one.
- The business name isn't valid
- Use a valid name that matches the name of your business.
- CAPTCHA
- You may have to complete a CAPTCHA challenge before a business account is created.
- Two-factor authentication
- Meta may ask you to turn on two-factor authentication before you can continue.
- “Please retry this action in a few minutes.”
- After a login on a new device, Meta pauses some business actions for a short time to keep the account safe. Wait, then try again later rather than right away.

Messages about admin access and verification
- No permission to create WhatsApp accounts
- You need Admin access on the business portfolio you picked. Get Admin access, or pick a portfolio you are an Admin on.
- Only a limited number of WhatsApp accounts before verification
- An unverified business can only create a limited number of WhatsApp accounts. More are allowed once Business Verification and WhatsApp's account checks are done. Meta says to start Business Verification in Meta Business Suite.
- “The Meta Business Account that you selected can't be verified.”
- Meta says the portfolio doesn't comply with its policies for the Platform. Go back and pick another, or check Meta Business Suite. If your Business Verification was rejected, Meta says you should have had an email with the reasons, and you can resubmit if you think it was a mistake, or use a portfolio that is already verified.
- Verification in progress
- If your Business Verification is still in progress, Meta says it must be completed before you can create a WhatsApp account. Check it in Meta Business Suite > Security Center > Business Verification.
- Maximum WhatsApp accounts reached
- Delete one in Meta Business Suite > Settings > Accounts > WhatsApp Accounts.
- WhatsApp account restricted
- Pick a different WhatsApp account, or go to Business Support Home, find the account, and submit an appeal if there is an issue.
The steps for Business Verification are in Verifying your business with Meta for WhatsApp.
Messages about the number
- “Phone Number has been blocked”
- If WhatsApp blocks a number, it can't be added. Meta says to check the alert in WhatsApp Manager Overview or follow the steps in Business Support Home, and to contact support if you believe it was blocked by mistake.
- “This number is registered to an existing WhatsApp account.”
- Meta says the number is already registered on WhatsApp Messenger, the WhatsApp Business app or the Platform. Disconnect it there, or use a new number, then come back and enter it again. It may take up to 3 minutes to become available.
- This number is already in your list
- It is already in your WhatsApp account. Go back, or restart the window, and select it.
- Maximum phone numbers reached
- A business admin deletes a number, or asks Meta's direct support to register more than 20 numbers across all your WhatsApp accounts.
- Your verified name violates WhatsApp guidelines
- The display name doesn't meet Meta's display name guidelines. Edit it and try again.
- “Your phone number doesn't appear to be valid.”
- Double check it, or try again after 5 minutes. Meta says the number must be working and verified by a telecom provider, and numbers that answer with an automated phone menu are not supported.
- Too many attempts
- Meta limits how many times you can register a number, request a code, or guess one. If you guessed too many times, Meta says to wait about 12 hours, then come back and select your existing accounts and number to verify again.
Which kinds of number work, and why a number on the WhatsApp app must come off it first, is in Which phone number can you use for the WhatsApp Business Platform? Display name rules are in WhatsApp display name rules.
No website? The box only some providers can show
Meta's page on making the website optional, updated 21 May 2026, says the website field on the business portfolio screen is required by default. A box that reads My business does not have a website or profile page appears only when the provider has been approved by Meta to verify its customers' businesses itself.
- If you tick it
- You cannot send messages until your business is verified.
- If the provider can't verify you
- You must first add a website yourself, in Meta Business Suite > Settings > Business info. Once it is accepted, you can also verify your business on your own.

If you ever take the number off the Platform
WhatsApp's Help Center article How to delete your phone number from the WhatsApp Business Platform sets out how a number comes off the Platform, and what is lost when it does.
To delete it from the Platform, select the WhatsApp account tied to the number, then Settings > WhatsApp Manager > Phone Numbers, and click the Delete icon next to the number. WhatsApp adds these rules:
- Admins only
- Only admins can delete a number, and you may be asked for the Facebook account password.
- 30 days
- A number can only be deleted if no paid messages were sent from the account in the last 30 days.
- Data
- All your WhatsApp Business Platform data is deleted with it.
- No second Platform account
- A number deleted from a WhatsApp Business Platform account can't be used again for another WhatsApp Business Platform account.
- Help
- If you signed up through a provider, WhatsApp says to ask them. If you can't see the delete option or run into problems, WhatsApp points to Meta Business Suite: Help > Help > Contact Support Team, and choose Chat.

Questions
Who owns the WhatsApp account after I connect through my provider's button?
Meta's overview says businesses that sign up through the window own all of their WhatsApp assets and have full access to WhatsApp Manager, and that providers cannot restrict this access in any way.
What screens will I see?
Sign-in, the data you allow, adding the number, verifying it by text or call, picking or creating a business portfolio and WhatsApp account, a permissions review, and a success screen. Meta is moving to put the number first, and says the rollout is in progress, so some people see the older order.
It says my Facebook account is too new. What do I do?
Meta suggests using an existing active Facebook account, or waiting a few hours and using the new account meanwhile.
It says the number is registered to an existing WhatsApp account.
Meta says the number is already on WhatsApp Messenger, the WhatsApp Business app or the Platform. Disconnect it there, or use a new number; it can take up to 3 minutes to become available.
Do I need a website?
By default, the website field on the business portfolio screen is required. Only a provider Meta has approved to verify businesses itself can offer a no-website box, and then you cannot send until your business is verified.
How do we take the number off the Platform later?
An admin deletes it in WhatsApp Manager > Phone Numbers. WhatsApp's Help Center adds that this is not possible within 30 days of a paid message, that all Platform data is deleted, and that the number can't be used again for another Platform account.
