Meta is splitting the WhatsApp Business account in two: what it means for your number
Until now one WhatsApp Business account held everything: your number, your message templates and your billing. Meta is splitting it into two. Your number goes into an account that always belongs to your business; templates and billing go into a separate one. Meta does the move for you, and nothing you have is lost.

When it happens
Meta started moving businesses on 23 September 2026 and expects to reach every business by mid-October 2026. It moves them in stages, so yours may not have moved yet. Until it has, WhatsApp Manager and Meta Business Suite look the same as before. Afterwards, Meta Business Suite shows two tabs where there used to be one: WhatsApp Accounts and Messaging Accounts.
The two new accounts
- WhatsApp account
- Holds one business phone number, your business profile and your catalogue, and later a business username. It is always owned by your business, and your conversation history and quality rating stay with the number.
- Messaging account
- Holds your message templates and your billing, including the payment method. It can be owned by your business or by a provider you work with, and each provider gets its own.
Your existing number, templates, business profile and payment method all carry over. Nobody has to sign up again. This includes businesses that keep using the WhatsApp Business app on the phone while a system is connected to the same number.
What this changes for you
- Your number is clearly yours
- The account that holds the number belongs to your business, whichever providers you use.
- Changing provider means sharing, not moving
- Meta's page says moving a business phone number from one provider to another is not supported in the new model. Instead you share your WhatsApp account with the new provider; the number stays where it is and existing conversations carry on. Sharing is additive: whether you keep the old provider or remove it is a separate decision, taken by you.
- More than one provider on one number
- One provider could send your marketing messages and another handle customer service, on the same number, each with separate billing. Customers still see one contact.
- Signing up with a second provider
- Meta's onboarding page says a business already set up with one provider can sign up with a different provider using its existing number, in the first phase of the change, which Meta times for the second half of 2026. Each provider gets its own Messaging account, created automatically when the business finishes the sign-up, and both account names now appear on the sign-up screens and in Meta Business Suite.
- The number comes first
- In the same phase, Meta's sign-up no longer offers to add a phone number later: the number is part of signing up, including when a provider asks the business to create and share an account.
- Templates do not travel on their own
- Templates belong to the Messaging account they were made in. Copying them to a new one resets their quality rating, and Meta says they take about 2 to 4 weeks to build back up. Meta's template migration page adds the rules of the copy: it recreates templates rather than moving them, works only between Messaging accounts owned by the same business, takes only approved templates whose quality is green or not yet rated, and reports each template that could not be recreated with a reason, such as a category mismatch or a formatting fault.
- Some limits, and the quality rating, are shared
- When several providers use one number, they share its daily limit on how many different customers can be messaged and its sending speed. The quality rating stays on the number too, so a careless provider can lower a rating that a careful one depends on.
The limits that come with the two accounts
Two things worth checking
- Every Messaging account that sends for you has a payment method. Billing now sits on each Messaging account, and each provider is billed through its own. From 1 October 2026 this matters more, because replies beyond 1,000 a month are charged and are not delivered without one.
- Before you change provider, plan for your templates. Ask for your approved templates to be copied across, and allow two to four weeks for them to build back up before you rely on them for large sends.
- Do not assume a provider you stopped using is gone. Removal is a step you take, not something that happens when you stop paying attention. Meta's page says a removed provider is told through an account update; until that removal is made, its connection can still send under your number. The Messaging Accounts tab in Meta Business Suite lists every connection, so that is the place to look.
Meta says this may still change
Questions
Do I need to do anything for the move itself?
No. Meta moves every business automatically, and your number, templates, profile and payment method carry over.
Can a provider take my number with them if I leave?
Under the new model the account holding your number is always owned by your business. A provider works through its own Messaging account, which is where its templates and billing sit.
Our provider says we have hit the template limit. Is that real?
Meta's accounts page sets it at 250 templates per Messaging account while the business portfolio is unverified, and up to 6,000 once it is verified and a number has an approved display name. Below the cap, archiving old templates frees room; at the cap, business verification is the fix.
Can we sign up with a second provider without giving up our number?
Meta's onboarding page says yes: a business already set up with one provider can sign up with a different provider using its existing number, and each provider gets its own Messaging account. The number, and the WhatsApp account that holds it, stay with the business.
Why does Meta Business Suite still look the same for me?
Your business has not been moved yet. Meta moves businesses in stages until mid-October 2026, and the old view stays until yours moves.
The two-step PIN tab has vanished from WhatsApp Manager. Were we hacked?
No. Alongside the account change Meta is retiring the six-digit two-step verification PIN for eligible numbers, in stages. Its page says that when the Two-step verification tab no longer appears, the change has already been applied and there is no PIN to set or reset. Ownership checks through a one-time code and the other protections remain.
Meta's page mentions 2027 and 2028. Is there more coming for us?
Not for the owner. Meta describes a new version of its technical interface in the first half of 2027 and a mandatory transition in the first half of 2028. Both are work for the provider's engineers; the only question for a business is whether its provider has a plan for them.
