WhatsApp display name: what Meta approves, why a name is refused, and how to change it
The display name is the business name on your WhatsApp number. You set it when the number is registered, Meta reviews it against a published set of rules once the number earns a higher messaging limit, and only an approved name appears at the top of a customer's chat. Most refusals come down to one of six things: the name is generic, promotional, formatted like a website, borrows Meta's or WhatsApp's name, claims to be official, or cannot be matched to the business anywhere outside WhatsApp.

Where the name shows, and when
- On your business profile
- From the day the number is registered, whatever the name's status.
- At the top of the chat and in the chat list
- Only once the name has been approved through display name verification. Until then the customer sees the number.
- Never, if the customer renamed you
- A customer who saved your number under their own label sees that label, not your display name. Meta's page says so plainly.
In WhatsApp Manager the name and its status sit in the Name column under Account tools, then Phone numbers.
Verification happens on its own
You do not apply. When the number reaches a higher messaging limit, Meta reviews the display name automatically against its guidelines and tells you the result in a Meta Business Suite notification. The outcome is approved or declined. A declined name is fixed by editing it to meet the guidelines below, which starts a fresh review, or by appealing through Meta's Developer Support.
Meta's Business Help Center adds two points. A business does not have to wait for this review, or for any account checks, before it starts: it can message customers as soon as it signs up on the WhatsApp Business Platform. And a name edited after a review has started must itself be reviewed and approved before the new version can be used.
Its article on connecting a phone number puts the order this way: business verification is what a business needs to raise its messaging limits, and the display name review begins once that business verification is complete.
Why the name matters beyond the chat header
The rules, and what gets a name refused
Meta's Help Center article sets out the principles with accepted and rejected examples. The examples below are ours, in the same spirit.
- It must be your business
- The name represents the business, or one of its departments, services or products. A personal name works only when the outside world can see what the business does: a surname on its own fails; the same surname with the trade attached passes. A test or demo account must still name the business it belongs to.
- Nothing generic
- A trade on its own (Bakery) or a place on its own (Dubai Marina) is refused. Meta wants a name that could only be you.
- No claim of status
- Nothing that could make a customer think Meta endorsed you. The words Official and Verified are out, however true they feel.
- No Meta, WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram in the name
- Not as a suffix, not as a channel label, not as a pop-up location.
- No advertising
- No discount, no slogan, no best-rated anything. The name is the name.
- Not a web address or an email
- A name formatted like a domain or an address is refused; Meta says this is to prevent phishing.
- Within policy
- A name that references goods the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy or the commerce policy does not allow is refused, even if the rest of the business is fine. Separate divisions can hold separate accounts, but only compliant ones.
The rule that catches real businesses: match the outside world
Changing the name
- Edit it in WhatsApp Manager. Account tools, Phone numbers, select the number, open the Profile tab, and use Edit in the Display name section. Meta allows ten changes in any 30-day period.
- Wait for the review. Every edit goes through display name verification again. Meta's page does not say how long it takes.
- Re-register the number within 14 days of approval. The new name is not applied until the number is re-registered with WhatsApp's servers, which is a short technical step the person running your system does. Miss the 14 days and the name has to be submitted for review again. Re-registering before approval does nothing.
- An Official Business Account cannot self-serve. If your number carries the blue tick, Meta's page says to contact its direct support to change the name.
Nothing in this changes the number itself or the business username, which is a separate thing with separate rules.
Meta's Business Help Center describes the same edit from Meta Business Suite: open WhatsApp Manager, choose the account, go to Phone numbers, and click the pencil beside the current name in the Name column, then enter the new name and select Next. What happens next depends on business verification. A business that is not verified gets a confirmation straight away. A verified business sees its number marked Pending Review until the name is approved, and then a View button appears beside it. The limit of ten changes runs in 30-day periods, and a fresh period of ten begins when one ends.
Meta's pages put it both ways
Questions
Why does our number say Pending Review after we changed the name?
Meta's Business Help Center article on changing the name says that is what a verified business sees while the new name is reviewed, and that a View button appears once it is approved. Its article on adding a new number describes the reverse, with unverified businesses waiting in review. Either way, the View button is the sign the name has been approved.
Our display name was declined. What do we do?
Compare it with the rules above; the usual reason is a generic word, a promotional tail, or a name that does not appear on your website. Edit the name in WhatsApp Manager so it matches your public branding, and Meta reviews it again. If you believe the decision is wrong, Meta's page says to appeal through Developer Support.
Do we have to wait for our display name to be approved before messaging customers?
No. Meta's Business Help Center says no display name review or account checks are needed to get started on the WhatsApp Business Platform; a business can message customers straight after sign-up, and the name is reviewed later.
Customers see our number, not our name. Why?
The name shows at the top of a chat only after display name verification approves it, and verification runs when the number reaches a higher messaging limit. Until then the profile carries the name but the chat header does not. A customer who saved you under their own label will always see that label.
How often can we change it?
Ten times in any 30-day period, each change reviewed again, and each approved change needs the number re-registered within 14 days or it lapses.
Can we put Official or Verified in the name?
No. Meta refuses names that appear to carry verification, and it refuses any reference to Meta, WhatsApp, Facebook or Instagram. Verified status is the blue tick, applied for separately.
