Meta AI inside WhatsApp chats with a business: writing help, Meta AI in a group (standard or Private Processing), the search bar, and the customer's Restricted chat

Meta AI now meets ordinary WhatsApp chats in four ways a business owner meets sooner or later: it can help someone word a message, a group member can add it to a group, where Meta AI is offered, it can be asked a question from the search bar, and a customer can switch on a setting that keeps it, and some other tools, out of a chat. Here is what WhatsApp's Help Center says about each, and what it means for a business.

Writing help: Meta AI suggests the words

WhatsApp's Help Center says Meta AI can help a person draft, edit or rephrase a message before sending it. Once at least four words are typed, the person can ask for a rewrite in one of five styles: Rephrase, Professional, Funny, Supportive or Proofread. With a few messages already in the chat, it can also suggest a whole reply based on the recent conversation. Nothing is sent until the person picks a suggestion, edits it if they want, and taps send.

Who can read it
Writing help runs on what Meta calls Private Processing. The Help Center says neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the messages or the suggestions, and that using it is always optional.
Where it works
Only in limited countries for now, and only in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish. Some styles are not offered in every language.
Switching it off
The Private Processing features setting in WhatsApp's Settings turns writing help on or off.

Our reading: a suggestion is still your message

The Help Center writes for personal accounts and does not say whether writing help appears in the WhatsApp Business app. Wherever a reply comes from, the customer reads it as yours, and Meta notes that AI suggestions may not be accurate or appropriate. Check any price, date or promise before you send it.

Meta AI as a member of a group

WhatsApp's Help Center now describes two kinds of Meta AI a group can have as a member. The standard one, called Meta AI, can read and respond to new messages in the group. The other, Meta AI with Private Processing, can plan, suggest activities and answer questions for the group without WhatsApp or Meta seeing the chat. Either way, a group member can add it, everyone sees a system message, and it works only on messages sent after it was added, and only in the group it was added to. It answers when a member talks to it or when it judges it can add something.

What it can do there
With standard Meta AI, the Help Center lists: answer questions, plan activities and events, run brainstorms, create polls, share recommendations, track action items, summarise long threads and group decisions, and help admins of large groups share group rules and set up alerts. For the Private Processing kind it lists quick information, planning, recommendations, action items, summaries and help for admins.
What it cannot do
Change group settings. It can only respond to messages in the group.
What Meta receives with standard Meta AI
Once a member adds it, Meta can read new messages sent in the group to make the AI work, and may use prompts, shared messages and feedback to improve its AI. People can ask Meta to delete what they shared with Meta AI.
How Private Processing differs
Meta says it runs on a Trusted Execution Environment, a confidential computing environment. Prompts and messages travel encrypted between the phone and that environment, are used to answer the request without any messages being stored, and no one, not even WhatsApp or Meta, can see the prompts or Meta AI's replies.
What stays the same
The Private Processing kind cannot change group settings either, and adding it does not change the end-to-end encryption of members' other personal chats and calls. A group admin can remove either kind at any time.
Where it works
Meta AI is offered only in limited countries for now, and in some markets only on phones set to certain languages. On the pages for adding and removing it, the web and desktop views say only that the feature is available on certain devices; the steps are given for phones. None of these pages lists the countries.

To add it, the Help Center's steps for Android phones are:

  1. Open the group and tap the group name.
  2. Tap Add, then select Meta AI.
  3. Choose Meta AI or Meta AI with Private Processing, then tap Done.
  4. Tap Continue and Add members as the screens ask.

A new group can also start with Meta AI in it, through Collaborate in the chat with Meta AI or through New group. To take it out, an admin opens the group, taps the group name, scrolls to the list of members, taps Meta AI, then taps Remove from group and OK. The Help Center adds that once Meta AI with Private Processing is removed, it can no longer process or respond to messages in the group.

Our reading: decide this before a customer group needs it

If your business runs a WhatsApp group for customers, a member could add Meta AI where it is available. With the standard kind, Meta can read new messages in that group from then on; with the Private Processing kind, Meta says it cannot see the chat. Decide which, if either, you are happy to have there, put that in the group's rules, and make sure every admin knows where Remove from group is. Our guide to WhatsApp groups run by a business covers the rest of running one.

Asking Meta AI from the WhatsApp search bar

In WhatsApp, typing in the search bar at the top of Chats shows results from your own chats, plus questions you can put to Meta AI. WhatsApp's Help Center says the content of your personal chats stays on your phone, and that Meta does not connect what you type back to you personally unless you send a prompt to Meta AI. By default, the suggested topics are generated automatically and are not based on your personal information.

  1. Tap the search field at the top of your Chats list.
  2. Tap a suggested prompt, or type your own and tap Ask.
  3. If you have never used Meta AI before, read and accept its terms when they appear.

WhatsApp then opens a chat with Meta AI to carry on the conversation. Searching chats for messages, photos, videos, links, documents and the rest works as it always did; using Meta AI is a choice.

What Meta can read
Only messages that mention Meta AI, or that people choose to share with it. The Help Center says Meta cannot read any other messages in personal chats.
What Meta may use
Once a chat with Meta AI has started, Meta may use those AI messages to improve AI quality.
Where it works
Only in limited countries for now, and in some markets only on phones set to certain languages.

Our reading: the search stays on the phone, the question does not

Search results from your chats stay on the phone, and Meta says it does not link what you type to you unless you send a prompt. Tapping Ask is sending a prompt: what you typed goes to Meta AI, and Meta may use it to improve its AI. Ask staff not to paste customer names, addresses or order details into an Ask prompt. These pages describe WhatsApp in general. The Business app's own version is covered in our guide to Meta AI business assistant in the WhatsApp Business app.

Restricted chat: the customer's setting that keeps AI out

On the latest version of WhatsApp, a setting called Restricted chat replaces the older Advanced chat privacy. In a one-to-one chat either person can switch it on; in a group, an admin can. It is switched on chat by chat, only from the main phone, and then applies to every message in that chat. Chats that already had Advanced chat privacy do not move to Restricted chat automatically.

What it stops
People in the chat cannot save media to their phone gallery automatically, cannot export the chat, cannot use Meta AI features in it, and cannot use linked devices for it. WhatsApp says the last point helps keep unofficial apps and AI agents out of the chat.
What it does not change
Messages stay end-to-end encrypted either way, and Meta AI can only see messages people choose to send it, whether the setting is on or off.
Older versions
Someone on an older version of WhatsApp may still be able to use an unofficial app or AI agent in the chat, and the person who switched the setting on is not told.
Chats with some businesses
Restricted chat is not available in chats with businesses that use Meta to store their messages securely and reply to customers on their behalf.

Our reading: if your team answers from linked devices

A business that answers customers from the WhatsApp Business app on a phone and on linked devices, such as a computer, could find that a customer who switches on Restricted chat blocks linked devices for that chat. If that happens, the chat can still be answered from the main phone. A business whose messages are stored and answered through Meta, as described above, is outside the setting altogether.

Questions

Can Meta AI write our WhatsApp replies to customers?

WhatsApp's Help Center describes writing help that suggests or rewrites a message in styles such as Professional or Proofread, and nothing is sent until the person picks a suggestion and taps send. It writes for personal accounts and does not say whether this appears in the WhatsApp Business app. It works only in some countries and in English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish for now.

Can a customer add Meta AI to our WhatsApp group?

It can happen. WhatsApp's Help Center describes a group member adding Meta AI, where it is available (limited countries and devices for now). With the standard Meta AI, Meta can then read new messages sent there; with Meta AI with Private Processing, Meta says WhatsApp and Meta cannot see the chat. A group admin can remove either at any time.

What is Meta AI with Private Processing in a WhatsApp group?

One of two kinds of Meta AI a member can add to a group. WhatsApp's Help Center says it can plan, suggest activities and answer questions for the group without WhatsApp or Meta seeing the chat: prompts and messages travel encrypted to a confidential computing environment and are used there without any messages being stored.

How does an admin remove Meta AI from a WhatsApp group?

Open the group, tap the group name, scroll to the list of members, tap Meta AI, then tap Remove from group and OK. The Help Center gives the same steps for both kinds.

If we ask Meta AI from the WhatsApp search bar, does Meta see our chats?

For WhatsApp in general, the Help Center says content from personal chats stays on the device, and Meta can read only messages that mention Meta AI or that people choose to share with it. A prompt you send from the search bar does go to Meta AI, and once a chat with Meta AI starts, Meta may use those AI messages to improve AI quality. These pages do not cover the WhatsApp Business app; its own search bar is covered in our Meta AI business assistant guide.

What is Restricted chat on WhatsApp?

A setting that stops people in a chat from exporting it, saving media automatically, using Meta AI features or using linked devices there. Either person in a one-to-one chat can switch it on, or an admin in a group. It replaces Advanced chat privacy on the latest version of WhatsApp.

Can a customer switch on Restricted chat in a chat with our business?

WhatsApp's Help Center says Restricted chat is not available in chats with businesses that use Meta to store their messages securely and reply to customers on their behalf. It does not describe other business chats separately.
