Adding your WhatsApp Business app to your Meta Account: what it unlocks, what Meta receives, and how to move it out
Sharing your Status to Instagram and claiming your Instagram name as a WhatsApp username both start on one screen: the Meta Account, the new name WhatsApp is rolling out for Accounts Center (you may see either name). This guide puts Meta's and WhatsApp's Help Centers about that screen into plain words: what adding WhatsApp gets you, what Meta receives when you do, and what moving it out later does and does not undo.

First: Accounts Center or Meta Account
WhatsApp's Help Center says Accounts Center is being renamed Meta Account. The change is rolling out gradually, so you may see either name as the place to manage settings across Meta's apps. This guide says Meta Account for both.
Adding WhatsApp is optional. WhatsApp's page calls it completely optional, and says WhatsApp is only in your Meta Account if you added it to the same Accounts Center before, or if you choose to add it once the option becomes available to you. Meta's page adds that if you don't, you can still use WhatsApp like you always have.

What a Meta Account is
Meta's Help Center describes a Meta Account as one account that works across several of Meta's apps and devices, such as Facebook, Instagram, Meta Quest and Meta AI. It gives you one login, your settings in one place, and features that work across your profiles.
- Only in some places
- Meta says Meta Accounts are only available in some locations, and are reaching people one by one, so one of your accounts may update before another.
- With several profiles in it
- You can use the same login across apps, manage settings across your Facebook, Instagram, Threads, WhatsApp and Meta Horizon profiles at once, share stories across Facebook and Instagram, and switch between profiles more easily.
- Security across profiles
- Meta says two-factor authentication applies across all the profiles and devices in the same Meta Account, and lists login alerts for Facebook, Instagram and Meta Horizon. The same page says not all Meta Account features are available for WhatsApp yet, so don't count on the Meta Account to protect the WhatsApp number (Our reading).
- What does not change
- Your messages, friends and followers stay as they are, and you still see each app's feed in its own app.
- WhatsApp gets less
- Meta's page says not all Meta Account features are available for WhatsApp at this time.
What adding WhatsApp unlocks
Meta's page on adding WhatsApp to a Meta Account names two kinds of benefit:
- Status to Stories
- You can easily share your WhatsApp Status to Stories on Facebook or Instagram.
- Settings in one place
- You can manage some settings for WhatsApp and your other profiles together, such as profile information, ad preferences, your date of birth across accounts, and whether to always share your status across your apps.

What stays private
Meta's page says adding WhatsApp to a Meta Account does not affect the privacy of your personal messages or calls, which stay end-to-end encrypted: no one else can read or listen to them, not even WhatsApp and Meta. It also says WhatsApp does not share your contact lists with any other Meta company.

What Meta receives, and what WhatsApp receives back
When you add WhatsApp to a Meta Account, Meta's page says other Meta companies receive information such as:
- Account information
- Your phone number and your WhatsApp profile picture.
- Age
- Your age information, if you gave it.
- Status you shared
- Your WhatsApp Status, if you shared it to Facebook or Instagram Stories.
- Device and connection
- For example your app version and the language set on your device in WhatsApp.
- Usage
- For example whether and how you use WhatsApp in your Meta Account, and how many times you shared your Status to Stories.
- Channels
- Information about your use of Channels, where it applies.
In the other direction, the page says WhatsApp receives identifiers for the profiles in the same Meta Account that you cross-post to, the device and connection details needed to connect them, and the age on your Meta Account. WhatsApp also collects its own performance and log information about WhatsApp in your Meta Account.
Meta then uses the information under the Meta Privacy Policy, the page says, including to show you ads, measure their performance, and provide more personalised features, content and suggestions across Meta's products.
Meta AI and businesses on Meta's tools: the other optional features
Meta's page says access to WhatsApp personal data is restricted, so other Meta apps don't use it, including for ads, except to count how many people Meta serves, to keep people safe, or when you choose an optional feature that works across Meta's products.
- A Meta Account
- Having WhatsApp in a Meta Account is one of those optional features.
- Meta AI
- Chatting with Meta AI is another.
- Businesses on Meta's tools
- Messaging businesses that use Meta's business tools is another; the page first names it for people who have not added WhatsApp to a Meta Account.
When people chat with businesses that use Meta's business tools, or add WhatsApp to a Meta Account, Meta says it may receive limited information to reduce spam, help businesses send more relevant messages and improve Meta ads. It says optional features are always explained in the app so people can choose.

How to add WhatsApp, and how to move it out
WhatsApp's Help Center gives these steps inside WhatsApp. They are its Android steps, which start from an icon before Settings. To add it:
- 1. Open it
- Tap the icon, then Settings > Meta Account.
- 2. Pick the profile
- Tap Add Facebook or Add Instagram and log into the profile you want to use.
- 3. Check it is you
- If profiles are suggested, tap Continue, or Not you? to log into the right one.
- 4. Finish
- Tap Allow and finish adding > Close. Your Meta Account now shows in WhatsApp's settings.
To move WhatsApp out:
- 1. Open it
- Tap the icon, then Settings > Meta Account > Manage account.
- 2. Choose WhatsApp
- Next to WhatsApp, tap Manage > Move out of this Meta Account.
- 3. Confirm
- Tap Yes, continue > Continue > Yes, finish moving.
Facebook or Instagram profiles are moved in or out from Meta's own settings: Manage account, then Add profiles and devices, or Manage next to a profile and Move out of this Meta account. Meta's page adds that you can deactivate or delete profiles from there, except WhatsApp.
WhatsApp's Help Center also has a page called About adding WhatsApp to your Meta Account, including what it says about Meta AI and the profiles in the same Meta Account, which Registering your WhatsApp Business app number covers.
Moving it out is not a full undo
- Within 7 days
- Meta's page says that once you move WhatsApp out, Meta stops combining your information between WhatsApp and the other profiles still in your Meta Account within 7 days.
- What was combined stays combined
- The same page says information that was already combined remains combined.
- The 2016 opt-out
- If you opted out of sharing your WhatsApp information with Meta in 2016, Meta says adding WhatsApp to a Meta Account means you are opting in to that sharing, and to all sharing that comes with a Meta Account.

Rules to know before you add it
- Not everywhere
- Meta says Threads and WhatsApp in Accounts Center are not available everywhere.
- At least two accounts
- You need at least two accounts to set it up, and a Meta account plus a WhatsApp account on their own do not count.
- One Facebook account
- Only one Facebook account fits in an Accounts Center. To add a different one, you remove the current one first.
- Removing takes profiles with it
- When you remove an account from an Accounts Center, any profiles associated with it are removed from that Accounts Center too.
- More than one Meta Account
- You don't have to put every profile in the same Meta Account. Meta says you can keep several Meta Accounts for different profiles and devices.
