Guide · WhatsApp Business app · For the owner whose backup won't finish
When your WhatsApp Business app backup gets stuck or fails: "You need more storage", corrupted backups, a forgotten backup password and the iCloud space rule, from WhatsApp's own Help Center
Your business number holds months of orders, prices and promises, and the backup may be the only copy that survives a broken phone. When the backup sits at the same percentage for an hour, says it failed, or won't restore, the wrong fix can wipe it for good. This guide puts WhatsApp's Help Center articles on stuck and failed backups, storage, corrupted backups and forgotten backup passwords in the order a business owner needs them.

First: these pages are about WhatsApp in general
WhatsApp's Help Center files these articles under Chats, in Back Up and Restore and Troubleshooting, not under WhatsApp for Business. We read them on 15 October 2026, in their Android and iPhone views.

Stop: if the chats are already gone, don't touch the backup
WhatsApp's article Can't back up or restore your chat history opens with a warning. If the chats you're looking for are already missing from your phone, don't delete your backup, create a new backup, or reset your phone. Your existing backup may be the only copy of those chats, and any of these actions will overwrite or delete it permanently.
It says to go to the restore steps instead, and to use the troubleshooting steps only if your chats are still on your phone. It also says you can only restore chat history if you turned on a backup option before and have a successful recent backup.

One backup per number, and no older copies
- WhatsApp cloud storage and Google Account
- WhatsApp says both store only one backup per phone number. Each new backup replaces the previous one, so there's no way to restore an older backup.
- iCloud
- The iPhone view says iCloud only stores one backup per account, and each new backup overwrites the old one.
- Google may delete an old backup
- WhatsApp's article About Google Account backups says Google may automatically delete backups that haven't been updated in five months, and says to back up regularly.
- Tied to the number and the account
- The same article says WhatsApp backups are tied to the phone number and the Google Account they're created with.
WhatsApp says its cloud storage is end-to-end encrypted and designed so that only you can restore your chat history, and that backups to a Google Account or iCloud aren't stored on WhatsApp's servers. It also says WhatsApp cloud storage is a new feature it is building and testing, and may not be available to you yet.

A backup that is stuck: WhatsApp's checklist
If a backup gets stuck while it is being made or restored, the troubleshooting article lists these steps:
- Restart
- Restart your phone.
- Log out and back in
- Log out and back in to your Google account (Android) or iCloud account (iPhone), or your WhatsApp account.
- Change the connection
- Turn Wi-Fi off and on, try a different Wi-Fi network, or try mobile data. WhatsApp says switching between different Wi-Fi networks can cause the backup to time out.
- Make it smaller
- Reduce the size of your backup, because your phone might be running too low on space.
- Power
- Keep the battery fully charged or plugged into a power source.
- Close WhatsApp
- Force stop or close WhatsApp.
- Dual SIM
- On a dual SIM phone, make sure the SIM connected to your WhatsApp number is active.
- Android: Google Play Services
- Check whether the Google Play Services app needs an update: phone Settings > Apps > Google Play Services.
On Android, if the progress bar shows 100% but the notification doesn't go away, WhatsApp says background work such as media uploads or downloads may still be finishing. Wait a few hours for it to clear. Partial or incomplete backups, it says, can come from an unstable internet connection, too little storage on the phone, or interruptions during the backup.
On Android, if the chats are still on the phone and backed up, the last step is to uninstall WhatsApp, restart the phone and reinstall it from the Google Play Store. WhatsApp says to check first that you have a recent backup you can restore from.
The error messages, and "You need more storage"
The article lists the messages you may see when making or restoring a backup. On Android they include "Unable to back up messages.", "Couldn't complete backup. Tap to give WhatsApp permission to back up to Google storage.", "Backup failed…" and "Waiting for Wi-Fi". On iPhone they include "Couldn't restore your chat history.", "Couldn't complete backup.", "Backup failed…" and "Waiting for Wi-Fi".
- Check the storage
- Android: WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat backup. iPhone: the iPhone's Settings.
- Check the connection
- Make sure you have an active internet connection.
- Restart
- Restart the phone, restart WhatsApp, and try the backup again.
- Clear out media (Android)
- Review your storage use and delete media you don't need.
If you see "Backup failed: You need more storage", WhatsApp says you've gone over your storage limit. You need to clear storage on the phone, for example by deleting media or chats, or move to a subscription plan if you're low on cloud storage.
For WhatsApp cloud storage, the article says that if you cancel your subscription, your backup is kept, but new backups won't be possible until it is under 2 GB or you subscribe again. If a subscription has expired, it says to resubscribe or bring the backup under 2 GB. After 120 days without a successful backup, it says, restoring your backup may not be possible.

iPhone and iCloud: the 2.05 times rule
The iPhone view says your available iCloud storage must be at least 2.05 times bigger than the size of your backup. Its other iCloud tips:
- Update
- Update the iPhone to the latest iOS and WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Reopen
- Close and reopen WhatsApp, and keep the battery charged or plugged in.
- iCloud Drive off and on
- iPhone Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Sync this iPhone.
- WhatsApp allowed in iCloud Drive
- iPhone Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Apps Syncing to iCloud Drive, and check WhatsApp is on. If it is, turn it off and back on.
- Same number, same account
- Restore with the same phone number and iCloud account the backup was made on.
- Encrypted backup
- Use the correct password or 64-digit encryption key.
If none of that works, the article says to sign out of iCloud entirely, restart the iPhone and sign back in. It warns that this could affect other apps besides WhatsApp and should only be tried after all other options. Only if your chats are still on the phone, you can delete the backup from iCloud and start a new one. WhatsApp says deleting a backup is permanent and can't be undone.

Android and the Google Account
The Android view lists these steps for a Google Account backup:
- 1. Permission
- Check WhatsApp's permissions and make sure Photos and videos is set to Allow.
- 2. Sync
- Phone Settings > Accounts > Manage accounts, select your Google Account, then Sync account > Menu > Sync now. Let the sync finish.
- 3. Remove
- Go back to the previous screen and tap Remove account.
- 4. Add it back
- Open WhatsApp and add the account again under Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Google Account, or add it when you install WhatsApp.
WhatsApp's article About Google Account backups says these backups use cloud storage provided and managed by Google. If you go over your Google storage limit, you need to clear space before backups start again. It says backup files vary in size and may use mobile data, so connect to Wi-Fi first, and that the first backup may take a while, so keep the phone connected to power.
"Some files couldn't be restored" and corrupted backups
- Chat files
- WhatsApp lists no space on the phone, an old backup, a corrupted backup, or problems with encryption and decryption.
- Media files
- No space on the phone, not enough time to restore, or problems with encryption and decryption.
If you have tried every step and still can't restore, the article says your backup is most likely corrupted. Backups can become corrupted through an interruption while the backup is being made, force-closing WhatsApp, sending or receiving corrupted files, or other reasons. WhatsApp says it can't restore a corrupted backup for you or find out what caused it.
The Android view adds that if you restore a backup and chats are still missing, you most likely restored a backup that didn't contain them, and says to back up your chats manually before changing phones.

A forgotten encrypted-backup password
WhatsApp's article Can't remember password for encrypted backup says an end-to-end encrypted backup is protected by a password or a 64-digit encryption key, and that this is the only way to open the backup or move it to a new phone. If you can't remember the password and no longer have your chats, you won't be able to open the backup. WhatsApp can't reset your password or help restore your backup.
WhatsApp gives two ways out when you can't remember the password:
- Set a new password
- Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup > Change password > I forgot my password. Verify yourself with your phone's PIN, a passkey, your password or the 64-digit key, then create a new password.
- Turn encryption off
- Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup > Turn off (on iPhone, through End-to-end encryption first). Android asks for your Google Account password. iPhone asks you to verify with your phone's PIN, a passkey, your password or the 64-digit key. Then tap Turn off and Done. WhatsApp says you can turn it back on at any time.
You get five tries at the password or key. After five wrong tries, you have to wait before trying again. If you use WhatsApp without restoring, the article says the backup stays available if you reinstall WhatsApp on another phone, but once you start backing up on a new phone, the old backup is replaced.

The iPhone's own backup
WhatsApp's article How to turn off WhatsApp in your device backup says your iPhone may automatically back up your WhatsApp chats, and those backups aren't protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp recommends turning WhatsApp off in your device backup when you set up an end-to-end encrypted backup.
The steps it gives: tap Settings or your profile picture, then your name, then iCloud > iCloud backup, tap your device under All device backups, and toggle WhatsApp off. It adds that turning this off doesn't turn on end-to-end encrypted backup, and its note also says WhatsApp messages aren't included in your device backup. We repeat both lines as the page writes them.
