WhatsApp for a clinic: what Meta's rules say about health information, medicines, reminders and AI agents
Patients already message clinics on WhatsApp. Meta's rules say a few specific things about health information, medicines, reminders and AI agents, and in places they hand the decision to the rules that already govern the clinic. Here is what Meta's own pages say.

Health information
Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says not to use WhatsApp for telemedicine, or to send or ask for health information, where the regulations that apply to the business forbid sending that information to systems that do not meet heightened requirements. Meta does not decide this for the clinic: the answer depends on the health and data rules the clinic already works under. The same policy makes the business responsible for the notices, permissions and consents it needs, including a published privacy policy, says not to ask people for personal ID card numbers or other sensitive identifiers, and says never to forward information from one customer's chat to another customer.
Medicines and health products
Drugs of every kind and medical and healthcare products are on the policy's prohibited list, and Meta says the list applies whatever licences a business holds. The exception for over-the-counter medicines covers only the countries Meta names, which do not include the UAE. The full list is in the guide to what a business may not sell or promote.
Reminders and follow-ups
Outside the 24 hours after a patient last wrote, a business can only message them with a template Meta has approved. Meta's template rules say a utility template must be non-promotional and also specific to, or requested by, the person receiving it. On that test, our reading is that a reminder for an appointment the patient booked fits the utility category, while a message inviting them to book something new is marketing, which needs their agreement to receive offers. The categories are explained in the template categories guide and agreement in the opt-in guide.
AI agents
- Meta Business Agent on the Platform
- Meta's overview, read on 6 October 2026, says every line of business is supported except finance, government, health, alcohol, gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony services. As of that reading, a clinic's Platform number is not eligible. Meta says its eligibility check is the authoritative test for a specific number.
- Other AI on the number
- Meta's rules on AI providers apply to any AI a business connects, as the guide to putting ChatGPT on a WhatsApp number explains, and the health information rule above applies to whatever answers the patient.
Questions
Can patients send us test results or reports on WhatsApp?
Meta's policy leaves it to the regulations that apply to the clinic. Where they forbid sending health information to systems that do not meet heightened requirements, WhatsApp must not be used for it. Check with the authority that regulates the clinic.
Can we send appointment reminders on WhatsApp?
After the 24 hours following a patient's last message, only with an approved template. Meta's utility test is that the message is non-promotional and specific to, or requested by, the patient; a reminder for an appointment they booked meets that test on our reading.
Can Meta's AI agent answer our patients?
Not on the WhatsApp Business Platform as of Meta's overview read on 6 October 2026, which lists health among the excluded lines of business.
Can we ask a patient for their ID number on WhatsApp?
Meta's policy says not to ask people to share personal ID card numbers or other sensitive identifiers on WhatsApp.

Running a clinic's WhatsApp?
We set up a business's WhatsApp number on a system its team runs, so every patient conversation sits in one place the clinic owns. A short call is the easiest way to see how that would work for you.
