Lead form ads or ads that open WhatsApp? What Meta's pages say each one gives a business

A business that wants leads from Facebook and Instagram ads usually chooses between two kinds: an ad with a form people fill in without leaving the app, and an ad that opens a WhatsApp chat. One gives you a list of contact details, the other a conversation. Meta's own pages describe what each produces, where it ends up and how Meta can learn which leads were worth having.

Two different results

Meta describes lead ads as a quick way for people to sign up to receive information from a business: they tap the ad, a short form opens inside Facebook or Instagram, and much of it is already filled in from what they shared with Facebook. The business ends up with contact details to follow up later. An ad that clicks to WhatsApp opens a chat with the business instead, so the customer's first message arrives straight away and the business answers in the conversation.

What a lead form gives you

Contact details, filled in for them
Meta says the form is built for phones and uses information people have already shared with Facebook, which is why it describes the details as accurate and ready to act on.
Leads belong to the Page
Every lead from a lead ad belongs to the business's Facebook Page, including leads from the same ad on Instagram. Unless the Page's leads access has been limited, every Page admin can see them.
Getting the leads out
Download them from Leads Center in Meta Business Suite, use a customer-management tool that supports lead ads, or have a system receive each lead the moment it arrives. A custom connection has to pass Meta's app review and business verification.
Form options
Meta offers a review-and-confirm step before submitting for people who mean it, filtering out leads that did not come from the ad, a file people can download after submitting, and tracking tags that record where each lead came from.

Teaching Meta which leads were good

Meta can aim lead ads at people likely to become customers, not just people likely to fill in a form, if the business tells it what happened next. Meta calls this Conversion Leads: the business's customer records send each lead's progress back to Meta. It works only with Meta's own lead forms, and Meta's guidelines for a good fit are at least 200 leads a month, uploads at least once a day, a sales stage reached within 28 days of the lead, and a conversion rate between about 1% and 40%. Meta estimates around a month before it pays off, and its setup waits for 7 days of these events before going further.

Ads that open WhatsApp have their own version, where a connected system reports purchases and other outcomes from the chat; it is covered in the guide to reporting chat sales.

If the follow-up is on WhatsApp

  1. A form gives a number, not permission. Meta's WhatsApp rules need the person to have agreed to hear from your business in particular, as the opt-in guide explains. If the plan is to follow up on WhatsApp, the form should ask for that agreement in plain words.
  2. The business writes first, so it is a template. A message to someone who has not written to you is sent from an approved template and charged as one; the 24-hour window guide explains why.
  3. An ad that opens WhatsApp skips both steps. The customer writes first, so the business answers inside the customer's own window, and Meta adds a period in which it does not charge for the business's messages, described in the ads guide.
  4. Choose by what the team will do next. A list to call back during working hours suits a form. A customer who wants an answer now suits a chat, provided someone, or something, answers quickly.

Questions

Do leads from a lead form arrive on WhatsApp?

No. They are stored against the Facebook Page, to download from Leads Center or pass to a connected system. WhatsApp comes in only if the business then messages the person, with their permission.

Who in our business can see the leads?

Meta's page says every admin of the Facebook Page can, unless access has been limited to chosen people with Meta's leads access settings.

Can Meta find us leads that actually buy?

With Conversion Leads, if your customer records report each lead's progress back to Meta. Meta's guidelines ask for at least 200 leads a month and a daily upload, among other conditions.

Can we run the same lead form on Instagram?

Yes, with an Instagram account connected. Meta's page says the leads still belong to the Facebook Page.

Want the chat, not just the form?

We set up a business's WhatsApp on a proper system, so chats from ads are answered quickly and customers who agreed to hear from you can be followed up. A short call is the easiest way to see whether it fits your business.
