Can an AI assistant set up WhatsApp for your business? Meta's WhatsApp Business Tools connector, what it can do in your name and how to take access back
In September 2026 Meta released a way for AI assistants to set up and manage WhatsApp business messaging. It is aimed at developers, but it acts in the name of whoever signs in, so an owner should know what it can do. Here is what Meta's own pages say it does, what it needs, what it is not for, and how to take its access back.

What Meta released
On 15 September 2026 Meta announced WhatsApp Business Tools, a connector that lets an AI assistant work on a business's WhatsApp setup. Meta calls it an MCP server. MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, is a common way for AI assistants to use outside tools. Meta's page gives setup steps for Claude, OpenAI's Codex and ChatGPT.
Meta describes it as for developers building on the WhatsApp Business Platform. It is in beta, rolling out gradually, and its set of tools may change. Its announcement adds that it is built for development and testing, not for sending at scale.
What the assistant can do in your name
Once connected, the assistant acts as the person who signed in, on the businesses and apps that person chose. Meta's page lists these jobs:
- Find your accounts
- List the businesses the person manages, their WhatsApp accounts and their phone numbers with each number's status.
- Set up a number
- Add a phone number, send it a verification code, verify it and register it so it can send and receive.
- Write and change templates
- List, create, edit and delete the message templates used to start conversations, and link to their approval progress.
- Send messages
- Send an approved template, or a plain text message inside the 24-hour window after a customer writes. Meta says it confirms who will receive it before sending.
- Account setup
- Set up a payment method, check business verification and start it, and link to the page in Business Settings where a developer makes the long-lasting access key for their own software.
What it needs, and Meta's guardrails
Meta lists three things before most of it works: admin access to the business, admin access to a WhatsApp-enabled app connected to that business, and WhatsApp's platform terms accepted for the business. Until an admin accepts the terms, sending and registering numbers are blocked. When something is missing, Meta says the assistant is told what to fix and where.
The person signs in with their Meta account and, on a consent screen, picks which businesses and apps the assistant may reach. Meta's announcement says no access keys end up in the chat history, every action is logged, and anything that changes the setup needs a signed-in person, not just an app. Requests are limited per person and per tool.
Our reading for the owner
Whoever signs in lends the assistant their own access
Access can be checked or removed at any time: on Facebook, open Settings, then Business Integrations. The checks it runs are the same ones covered elsewhere: business verification in the verification guide, template rules in the template mechanics guide and the 24-hour rule in the 24-hour window guide.
