When your WhatsApp ads run, and what Meta may spend each day: ad schedules, budgets that flex and automatic rules

Every tap on an ad that opens WhatsApp is a chat someone has to answer, so when the ad runs and how much it spends on a given day decide how busy your team is. Meta lets you schedule ads by day and hour, but its ad system also moves spend between days on its own. Here is what Meta's Help Center says about schedules, daily and lifetime budgets, and the automatic rules that can change ads while nobody is watching.

Showing ads only at set times

Meta's Help Center says you can control both the dates and the times an ad is shown. An ad set can be scheduled to run on specific days and hours, with either a lifetime or a daily budget, and each scheduled slot must run for at least one hour. Meta says the ad appears in the audience's own time zone, and suggests a separate campaign for each time zone if you want to see how people respond in each one.

A new ad starts only after Meta has reviewed it against its Advertising Standards, which Meta says typically takes up to 24 hours and sometimes longer. To start on a future date, Meta suggests creating the ad in advance and turning it off until then, or setting a schedule on the ad set. A schedule can be changed later in Ads Manager, but Meta says only on a computer, not on a phone, and that editing some details may restart the learning phase or send the ad back for review.

Delivered on time, seen a little later

Meta says it does not deliver ads outside the schedule you set, but a small number of people may still see them afterwards, because Meta controls when an ad is delivered, not when someone scrolls down to it. Its own example is an ad delivered into a feed two minutes before the schedule ends and seen ten minutes later.

Our reading: schedule for the hours someone answers

If nobody answers WhatsApp after closing time, an ad running at night fills the inbox with chats that wait until morning. Scheduling the ad for staffed hours keeps most taps inside them, and an automatic away reply covers the few that arrive late. Our guide to automatic replies in Meta Business Suite covers those.

A daily budget is an average, not a cap

Meta's Help Center says it is gradually giving some ad accounts more daily budget flexibility: on days with better opportunities, Meta may spend up to 75% over your daily budget, and less on other days. Over a calendar week, Sunday to Saturday, it will not spend more than seven times the daily budget, and a campaign shorter than seven days will not spend more than the daily budget times the number of days. Spend can also vary by hour of the day.

Daily budget
The average you want to spend each day, worked out over a week. Meta says it is not a hard cap.
Lifetime budget
The total you are willing to spend over the whole run of a campaign or ad set. Meta says it is a hard cap, not an average, though Meta may still spend more on days with better opportunities and less on others.
Campaign budget
One budget for the whole campaign, which Meta's system moves in real time to the ad sets with the best opportunities. Meta says all campaign budgets use Advantage+ campaign budget.
Ad set budget
A separate budget for each ad set, for more control over each one, for example when ad sets have different goals or very different audience sizes.

Our reading: a big spending day is a big chat day

If Meta spends well over the daily budget on a day it sees good opportunities, more people may tap through to WhatsApp that day too. A daily budget sized to what your team can answer on an average day can still bring a busier one.

Rules that act while nobody is watching

Ads Manager also has automatic rules, each with an action and a condition, which you can see on the Manage rules page. Meta says it checks every rule at least once every 30 minutes, and the page shows each rule's results and who created or last edited it. If ads switch off and no rule explains it, Meta notes that ad sets also stop on their own when they spend their budget, reach their end date or under-deliver.

Choosing when a rule is checked

Meta's page on creating a rule says each rule has a Time range, the number of days of data it looks at, and a Schedule, which decides how often the rule is checked. Its page on custom schedules says that in the Schedule section you can select Custom, pick specific days and times, click Close, then Create or Save rule. A rule can also notify the people you add as subscribers. Our reading: if a rule pauses an ad, schedule it for hours when someone can see the alert and answer the chats it was protecting.

Questions

Can an automatic rule run only on certain days?

Yes. Meta's page on custom rule schedules says that when you create or edit a rule, you can select Custom in the Schedule section and pick specific days and times for the rule to be checked.

Can we run our WhatsApp ads only during business hours?

Yes. Meta's Help Center says an ad set can be scheduled to run on specific days and times, with a lifetime or a daily budget, for at least one hour at a time, in the audience's time zone. Meta adds that a small number of people may still see an ad shortly after the schedule ends.

Why did Meta spend more than our daily budget?

Meta says a daily budget is an average over a Sunday to Saturday week, not a hard cap. For some accounts it may spend up to 75% over the daily budget on days with better opportunities, but not more than seven times the daily budget across the week. A lifetime budget is a hard cap.

How long before a new ad starts running?

Meta says an ad starts after it has been reviewed against its Advertising Standards, which typically takes up to 24 hours and sometimes longer.

Ready for the chats your ads bring in?

We set up a business's WhatsApp number on a system its team runs, so every customer conversation sits in one place the business owns. A short call is the easiest way to see how that would work for you.
