When Meta reads your WhatsApp ad chats for sales and leads: automatic events, what it labels, what it switches off, and where to turn it on
If you run ads that open a WhatsApp chat, Meta offers a switch called automatic events. Turn it on and Meta looks at the new chats those ads start, and labels the ones that look like a sale or a lead. Here is what Meta's own pages say it reads, where it is offered, where the switches are, and what it changes in the WhatsApp Business app.

What automatic events is
Meta's Business Help Center describes automatic events for business messaging as a way to identify and label valuable outcomes from Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp chats. If you choose to share your business conversations with it, Meta works out whether outcomes such as purchases or leads came from your ads that click to message. The point, Meta says, is to stop labelling important chats by hand.
WhatsApp's Help Center calls it an optional feature that labels orders and leads within chats automatically. Nothing happens unless you switch it on.
How Meta decides a chat was a sale or a lead
- Which chats
- Meta's developer page, written for businesses connected through a provider's sign-up screens, says that once a business opts in, Meta analyses the customer's new message threads that started from ads that click to WhatsApp.
- How it reads them
- The same page says Meta uses a combination of regex (pattern matching on the words) and natural language processing (software that reads the meaning of text).
- What it looks for
- Meta's page on auto-detected purchases says it looks for specific keywords and phrases that signal a customer's high intent to buy, such as a customer showing interest in buying a product or service, a business sending a link to complete a purchase, or a customer confirming an order.
- What it records
- Meta's reference for developers describes two kinds of event: a lead and a purchase. A detected purchase can carry a currency and an amount.

Where it is not offered
Meta's developer page says automatic event identification is not available to businesses in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Japan. The auto-detected purchases page says the count leaves out messaging ads delivered to and from Europe and Japan. The Business Help Center adds that the feature is only available in certain countries or regions, without listing them.

Turning it on in Meta Business Suite
Meta's pages give two routes. Either one works:
- Through Settings
- In Meta Business Suite, open Settings, then Accounts, then WhatsApp accounts, and pick the account for the number you want. In the Summary tab, scroll to Privacy and data sharing and turn on the switch to automatically identify order and lead events from conversations in this account. Meta's pages word the switch slightly differently: one splits it into order events and lead events, the other names order, lead and other events.
- Through Inbox
- In Meta Business Suite, open Inbox, choose the WhatsApp tab, click Automations at the top left, and turn on the switch next to Orders or Leads.
- Who it applies to
- Meta's developer page says the setting applies to every provider that has access to that WhatsApp account. It is one switch for the account, not one per provider.
Once a purchase or lead is detected, the chat is labelled. Meta says you can review those labels in the WhatsApp Business app or in Inbox.
Turning it on in the WhatsApp Business app, and what it switches off
WhatsApp's Help Center gives two ways in from the app:
- From Lists
- Go to Tools, then Lists, tap Auto-created lists are turned off, then tap Turn on (or Turn off).
- From For you
- Go to Tools, and in the For you section tap See more under Auto-create lists, then Turn on (or Turn off).
The same article says switching it on changes several things in the app:
- Features that may stop working
- Broadcast lists, disappearing messages, greeting and away messages, and editing and deleting messages. Disconnecting automatic events brings them back.
- A line in every chat
- Your chats are then managed through Meta's secure service, and chats with your business show the text "This business uses a secure service from Meta to manage this chat".
- Linked devices
- Any devices already linked to the account are disconnected. Most can be linked again once setup finishes, but WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS cannot.
- You can undo it
- WhatsApp says you can turn automatic events off at any time.
The Business Help Center adds that if you use both the Business app and Meta Business Suite, the labels sync across both, but setup and management happen in Meta Business Suite. How a team shares one Business app number on linked devices is in our guide to a team on one WhatsApp Business app number.

What you see in Ads Manager
Meta's Ads Manager help page shows two ways to tell the purchases you reported apart from the ones Meta detected. You need an Ads Manager account and a campaign, ad set or ad that is running or recently finished.
- Hover
- Open the campaign or ad set, find the Meta Purchases or Purchases column, and hover over the number to see reported and auto-detected purchases separately.
- Breakdown
- Open the campaign or ad set, select Breakdown, then Action, and choose Messaging Purchase Source.
Meta describes the auto-detected purchases count as purchases automatically detected in messaging conversations and attributed to your ads, and labels the metric as estimated and in development.
The WhatsApp catch: ad optimisation still runs on purchases you report
The Business Help Center says automatic events may let you use the goals that maximise leads or purchases through messaging, but adds that using automatic events in ads optimisation is only available, at this time, for ads that click to Messenger and ads that click to Instagram Direct. WhatsApp is not on that list.
For ads that click to WhatsApp, Meta's purchases page says the Maximize number of purchases through messaging goal needs 10 or more purchase events shared with Meta in a prior 30 day period. The chats must have started from an ad that clicks to WhatsApp and been labelled a purchase within 7 days of the customer clicking the ad. Meta lists these ways to share them:
- The Business app switch
- In the WhatsApp Business app, go to Tools, then Your customers' activity, and turn on Allow Meta to receive information about events.
- Purchase labels
- Label the chat New Order, Pending Payment, Paid or Order complete. Meta warns that purchases marked with your own custom labels may not be counted.
- Orders in the app
- Creating an order, or updating its status for example to Paid, counts as a purchase event. Meta says this is not available in India, Malaysia and Pakistan.
- Through a messaging provider
- A provider whose system uses Meta's Conversions API for business messaging can send the purchase events for you.
The same page says each Facebook Page running these ads must qualify on its own. How the purchases and leads goals compare is in our guide to whether WhatsApp ads should aim for leads or purchases.

If a provider runs your number on the Platform
Meta's developer pages describe the same feature for businesses whose WhatsApp number is connected to a provider's system. While connecting the number through Meta's sign-up screens, the business can tick Instruct Meta to automatically identify order and lead events. After that, a provider whose system is set up to receive these notifications is told each time Meta detects a lead or a purchase in a chat that came from an ad that clicks to WhatsApp, and it can report that event back to Meta through the Conversions API. A business already connected can use the Meta Business Suite switch above.

Questions
Does Meta read all my WhatsApp chats if I turn this on?
Meta's developer page, written for businesses connected through a provider, says Meta analyses the customer's new message threads that started from ads that click to WhatsApp, using pattern matching and natural language processing, once the business opts in. For the WhatsApp Business app, WhatsApp's Help Center adds that turning it on means your chats are managed through Meta's secure service, and chats with your business show a line saying so. Meta's pages say nothing more about which chats are read.
Is automatic events available in the UAE?
Meta's pages say it is not available in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Japan, and that it is only available in certain countries or regions. Our reading: the UAE is not on that excluded list, but Meta does not publish where it is offered, so check whether the switch appears in your own account.
Why did my away messages stop after I turned it on?
WhatsApp's Help Center says turning on automatic events may affect greeting and away messages, broadcast lists, disappearing messages, and editing and deleting messages. Turning automatic events off restores them.
Will automatic events help Meta optimise my WhatsApp ads for purchases?
Not at this time, according to Meta's Business Help Center: automatic events in ads optimisation is only for ads that click to Messenger and Instagram Direct. For WhatsApp, Meta's purchases page lists the Business app's events switch, purchase labels, orders in the app and the Conversions API through a provider.
Can I turn it off again?
Yes. WhatsApp says you can turn automatic events off at any time, and in Meta Business Suite it is a toggle in the same places.
