WhatsApp read receipts and typing indicators from a business number: who turns the ticks blue

On a personal phone, the two blue ticks appear the moment you open a chat, and the other person sees 'typing' as you write. On the WhatsApp Business Platform neither happens by itself. Your system decides when a customer's message is marked read and whether they see a typing indicator while a reply is prepared. Meta's pages set the rules: mark messages read within 30 days, marking one marks the earlier ones too, and the typing dots last until you reply or for 25 seconds, whichever comes first.

Blue ticks are a decision, not an event

Meta's page describes marking a message as read as something your system does, using the identifier of the message the customer sent. Until it does, the customer sees two grey ticks: delivered, not read. That is why a business number can hold a message for an hour and the customer never sees the blue ticks, and why another business shows blue ticks instantly and then goes quiet, which customers resent more.

Marking one marks the ones before it
Meta's page says that when you mark a message as read, earlier messages in the same conversation are marked read as well. Mark the latest and the backlog clears.
Within 30 days
A message can be marked read up to 30 days after it arrived. After that the ticks stay grey for good.
What the customer sees
The same two blue ticks they see from a friend. There is no sign that a system, rather than a person, produced them.

The honest setting

The best moment to mark a message read is when a person has actually read it: the agent opens the chat, the ticks turn blue, the reply follows. A system that marks everything read on arrival makes every slow answer look like being ignored. A system that never marks anything read makes a responsive team look absent. Neither is a Meta rule; both are choices in how your system is set up.

Replying to one message in particular

Meta's contextual replies page describes the other courtesy a phone gives without being asked: answering a specific message so that it appears quoted in a small bubble above the reply, the way a long-press reply works in the app. A system can do the same, which matters when a customer has sent four questions in a row and the answer to the second one would otherwise float free. Meta lists the cases where the quote does not show: the earlier message has been deleted or has passed into Meta's long-term storage, typically after 30 days unless local storage is on; the reply is a template; or the reply is a voice note, photo or video to a customer on a KaiOS phone. A reaction cannot be sent as a reply to a specific message at all. Whether the quote works for messages older than a month depends on the storage choice made in the registration guide.

The typing indicator: 25 seconds, and only if you mean it

Meta's typing-indicators page describes the second signal. When your system marks a message read it can, in the same step, ask WhatsApp to show the customer that the business is typing. Meta's guidance on when to use it is short.

When it shows
Only together with the read mark, so the customer sees the blue ticks and then the typing dots.
How long it lasts
Until your reply arrives, or 25 seconds, whichever comes first. It cannot be extended by sending it again earlier than that.
Meta's one rule
Show it only if you are going to respond. A typing indicator followed by silence is, in Meta's words, a poor user experience.
Who it suits
Meta's page suggests it when a reply will take a few seconds, which in practice means an automated answer being assembled, or an agent who has opened the chat and started typing.

What this means for your team

  1. Decide when ticks turn blue. On open, on reply, or never. Tell whoever runs your system which one, and why. A medical clinic and a marketing team may reasonably choose differently.
  2. Tie the typing dots to a real reply. If an automated answer takes a moment, the indicator buys patience. If a human will answer in ten minutes, do not show it.
  3. Remember the window. Reading a message does not extend the 24-hour window; only the customer's own messages, or a call, do that. A chat read on day two but not answered needs a template on day three.
  4. Speed is not the constraint. Meta's overview says a business number can send 80 messages a second by default. If replies are slow, the delay is in the team or the system, not in WhatsApp.

Questions

Why do our customers see grey ticks for hours even though we have read the message?

Because on the platform nothing is marked read until your system says so. If your system never sends the read mark, the ticks stay grey. Ask whoever runs it when the mark is sent; Meta allows it any time within 30 days of the message.

Can we turn off read receipts like on a personal phone?

Simpler than that: just do not mark messages read. Meta's page describes the mark as an action your system takes, not a setting that is on by default.

Can we show 'typing' while an agent finds the answer?

For 25 seconds at a time, sent with the read mark, and Meta asks that you show it only when a reply is actually coming. For a longer wait, a short message saying someone is looking into it is the honest choice.

Can our replies quote the customer's message like on a phone?

Yes. Meta's page describes a reply sent against a specific earlier message, which the customer sees quoted in a bubble above it. It does not work for template messages or reactions, and the quote disappears if the earlier message was deleted or is older than Meta's storage keeps, typically 30 days.

Does marking a message read cost anything?

Meta's pages describe no charge for the read mark or the typing indicator. The guide to how Meta charges covers what is billed; these are not on the list.

Want the blue ticks to mean a person actually read it?

We set up a business's WhatsApp number on a proper system where a message is marked read when an agent opens it, the typing indicator shows only while a reply is being written, and the 24-hour window is tracked so nothing is left for a template. A short call is the easiest way to see whether it fits your business.
