Meta's AI in your WhatsApp ads: what Advantage+ picks for you, what turns it off, and what to check before the ad goes live

Start a leads or sales campaign in Ads Manager today and Meta's AI is already switched on. Meta calls it Advantage+. It picks the budget split, the audience and where the ad appears, and it switches itself off if you narrow those too far. Here is what Meta's Help Center says it decides, what turns it off, and what is worth checking before an ad that opens WhatsApp goes live.

What Advantage+ is

Meta describes Advantage+ as a suite of products that uses AI to adjust a campaign in real time and match the ad to the people most likely to act on it. When you choose the sales, app promotion or leads objective, Ads Manager opens in the Advantage+ setup, with Advantage+ shown as on. The manual features are all still there; Meta says a campaign with Advantage+ off can still benefit if it uses the broadest settings possible. Campaigns about social issues, elections or politics, and pharmaceutical campaigns, may not get every Advantage+ feature.

What it decides for you

Budget
One budget is set for the whole campaign and Meta spreads it across the ad sets. Meta calls this campaign budget, also known as Advantage+ campaign budget.
Audience
The audience you describe is treated as a suggestion. Meta says it draws on past conversions, data from the Meta Pixel and how people reacted to earlier ads, shows the ad to people who match the suggestion, and to others when that is likely to improve results.
Placements
Meta's delivery system chooses where across its apps the ad appears, to make the most of the budget and widen the ad's reach.
Conversion location and goal
In a leads campaign, Ads Manager selects a conversion location, meaning where the lead happens, and a performance goal for you. Both can be changed.

Taking the AI one piece at a time

Meta also sells the same AI as single features you can switch on in any campaign. For the audience, your own customer list, a lookalike audience or detailed targeting can each be used as a suggestion, which lets Meta reach people outside it when that is likely to help. Advantage+ creative changes your images and videos into versions Meta expects your audience to interact with more, and Advantage+ catalog ads show each person the products most relevant to them. Meta recommends testing its AI audience against your own for almost every kind of campaign, except retargeting. Our reading: an ad shown only to people who have already messaged you is retargeting, so that is the one case where Meta does not suggest handing the audience over.

Which creative changes use generative AI

Meta's page on Advantage+ creative lists each change it can make to an ad and marks the ones that use generative AI, among them adding animation or music, background generation, image generation, text generation, translations and video subtitles. It says some changes may be turned on by default, that you can turn them off at any time, and that pictures made or heavily edited with certain of these features may carry an AI info label. It also says advertisers in some regulated industries, such as financial services and health, ads in special categories such as housing, jobs, credit and politics, and some countries may not have immediate access to every generative AI feature. Our reading: if an option you read about is missing from your account, check your ad category before assuming a fault.

What turns it off

Meta's rule is simple: narrow the budget, the audience or the placements too far and that section shows Advantage+ off, and the campaign is no longer an Advantage+ campaign. Its articles name the specific moves.

  • Running several ad sets with a budget on each one instead of a campaign budget.
  • Unticking Use as a suggestion after choosing Further limit the reach of your ads, which turns the audience from a suggestion into a hard limit.
  • Excluding a placement in any ad set, or opting out of mobile or desktop devices.

Some things leave it on: optional spending limits, a campaign budget with one ad set or several, and opening Show more controls or adding suggestions in the audience section. Account-level controls never affect it. Meta gives examples of when to use them: a business that cannot show ads to people under a certain age, or cannot ship to some countries. If you do exclude a placement, Meta offers to let up to 5% of the budget be spent on each excluded placement when that is likely to help.

Our reading: put the hard rules on the account, not the campaign

Because account-level controls do not switch Advantage+ off, they are the place for the rules your business cannot bend, such as an age limit or countries you do not serve. Narrowing each campaign to enforce them is what turns the AI off.

How the optional spending limits behave

With a campaign budget, Meta's AI moves money between ad sets towards the cheapest results it can find, and spending limits on an ad set keep Advantage+ on. Meta's Help Center explains how they work. A maximum is a weekly cap, averaged over a Sunday to Saturday week: one day can go over it, but the week stays at or below seven times the limit. A minimum is a target range, not a guarantee. Meta recommends using as few limits as possible, does not recommend a minimum and a maximum on the same ad set, and says switching from a campaign budget to ad set budgets resets them. Edits take up to 15 minutes to apply. Our reading: if one ad set sends people to WhatsApp in a city where you are new, a minimum is how you stop the budget drifting entirely to the ad set that already works.

A leads campaign whose chat opens in WhatsApp

Meta says an Advantage+ leads campaign keeps every conversion location a manual leads campaign has, including lead ads that click to message, and every performance goal. Our reading: that covers an ad whose lead comes in as a WhatsApp chat, though Meta's article does not name WhatsApp and warns the feature may not be available to every account yet. Its steps run like this.

  1. Start the campaign. In Ads Manager choose Create, then the Leads objective. The Budget section shows Advantage+ on, with campaign budget selected.
  2. Check the conversion location. One is selected for you. Our reading: this is the step to slow down on, because if it is not the messaging option you want, the lead will not arrive in WhatsApp. Our leads or purchases guide covers the WhatsApp choices.
  3. Pick the Page and the goal. Choose the Facebook Page the ad runs from, and keep or change the performance goal Meta selected.
  4. Leave the audience as a suggestion. You can open more controls and add suggestions, but unticking Use as a suggestion may turn Advantage+ off.
  5. Keep placements open, then publish. Excluding placements or devices turns Advantage+ off. If that happens, Meta says the Campaign opportunities panel on the right offers Apply now to turn the Advantage+ leads campaign back on.

Meta lists one optional step before you begin: connecting your customer-records software to Meta through the Conversions API, which it calls a best practice. Our Conversions API guide explains what that report back to Meta involves.

The averages Meta publishes

Meta says leads campaigns with Advantage+ on delivered on average 14% lower cost per lead and 10% lower cost per qualified lead than leads campaigns with it off, in early testing, and that advertisers using Advantage+ sales campaigns saw a 9% improvement in cost per conversion on average. These are Meta's averages across many advertisers, not a forecast for one business.

Questions

Why can't we see some of Meta's AI options for our ad pictures?

Meta's page on Advantage+ creative says the changes on offer depend on the ad format, placements and whether a catalog is used, and that some regulated industries, special ad categories and countries may not have immediate access to every generative AI feature.

Can Meta spend more than an ad set's maximum limit on one day?

Yes. Meta's Help Center says a maximum spend limit is managed over a Sunday to Saturday week, so daily spend can go over it on a given day, while the week's total stays at or below seven times the limit. Meta says it may consider refunds for spending over the weekly maximum. A minimum limit is a target range, and Meta says no refunds are issued when it is not met.

Can we let Meta's AI choose only the audience, and set everything else ourselves?

Yes. Meta offers Advantage+ audience on its own, and describes it as the alternative for an advertiser who wants AI to find the audience without automating every step of the campaign. Your customer list, lookalike audience or detailed targeting then act as suggestions Meta may reach beyond. Meta recommends testing it against your own audience for almost all campaigns, except retargeting.

Can an ad that opens WhatsApp run with Advantage+ on?

Meta says Advantage+ leads campaigns keep all the conversion locations of a manual leads campaign, including lead ads that click to message. Our reading: that includes a lead that arrives as a WhatsApp chat, but Meta's article does not name WhatsApp and says the feature may not be available to every account yet, so check what Ads Manager offers you.

We cannot serve some countries or age groups. How do we keep Advantage+ on?

Use account-level controls. Meta says they do not affect a campaign's Advantage+ state and gives exactly those examples: not showing ads to people under a certain age, or not shipping to some countries. Narrowing each campaign's audience or placements instead is what turns Advantage+ off.

Our campaign shows Advantage+ off. How do we turn it back on?

Undo the narrowing: use one campaign budget instead of a budget per ad set, keep the audience as a suggestion, and stop excluding placements or devices. For a leads campaign, Meta says the Campaign opportunities panel on the right offers Apply now to turn the Advantage+ leads campaign back on.

Does a high campaign score mean the ad will do well?

No. Meta says campaign score predicts how optimised a campaign is before it is published, and that opportunity score, even a high one, does not reflect actual or future performance and does not guarantee it.

Ready for the chats your ads bring in?

We set up a business's WhatsApp number on a system its team runs, so every customer conversation sits in one place the business owns. A short call is the easiest way to see how that would work for you.
