Closing a Meta business portfolio that holds your WhatsApp: what must come off first, and what survives
Owners end up with a business portfolio they no longer want: one an old agency made, a second one created by mistake, or a brand that has closed. Deleting it is permanent, and if the business's WhatsApp account sits inside it, that has to come out first. Here is what Meta's Business Help Center says deleting does, what stops it, and the gentler option Meta points to.

What deleting does
Meta's help article on deleting a business portfolio is blunt: it cannot be reversed, and only someone with full control of the portfolio can do it. Deleting it permanently erases the event source groups, the asset library and the projects inside it. It also ends any access the portfolio had to other businesses' Pages, ad accounts and pixels, and any permissions it had shared with other businesses.
- Meta says deleting the portfolio does not delete a connected WhatsApp business profile, but that profile has to be removed from the portfolio before the deletion is allowed.
- Facebook Pages
- A Page can be moved to a different portfolio, or it goes back to the personal profile of the person who owns it, including a Page someone else had shared with you.
- People
- Everyone keeps the level of access they had to each Page and ad account, and carries on through their personal Facebook profile.
- The steps
- Settings in Meta Business Suite, then Business info, then Permanently delete business, and follow the instructions on screen. The business is then pending deletion for 24 hours; after that it cannot be reopened.
What stops the deletion
Meta also says not every portfolio can be deleted, and its troubleshooting article lists what gets in the way. For a business on WhatsApp, the one that matters most is plain: if a WhatsApp Business account with at least one linked phone number is connected to the portfolio, that account has to be removed first, and so does every provider or other business that has access to it.
- Ad accounts. No unpaid balance, which Meta says can take up to two weeks to process, and every ad account within its Advertising Standards.
- Payment methods and connected apps. All of them removed from the business.
- Pages and people. Fewer of both, and every Page removed must keep at least one person with full control of it, or everyone loses access to that Page.
- Accounts set up for software. A portfolio with system users cannot be deleted.
- An Instagram professional account. It needs a portfolio, so the portfolio stays unless the account is switched back to a regular Instagram account.
- Customised lead access. Someone with full control restores the default for every Page that has it, under Integrations in the portfolio settings, then Leads access.
- A US political ads disclaimer. A portfolio used to create one cannot be deleted, even after the disclaimer is removed from every Page.
The gentler option
Meta's troubleshooting article ends with an alternative for anyone who does not want to delete the portfolio for good: deactivate its ad accounts instead.
